Thanks for the heads up.

Maybe I'll play with the H322 in stead.

Been using h380 myself, imr4064 as a backup

Long before varget was even a brown stain runnin down the back of catman's momma's leg.

That being said, varget does work great in my 22-250 grin

Thanks again for the powder recommendations.

Since my son-in-law purchased this rifle used I decided to clean it with Wipe Out. I let it sit for one hour.

[Linked Image]

Here's a photo of the first patch. I did it again and let it sit for half an hour. There was a tiny spot of blue so I called it good. Maybe the seller didn't clean it and thought it was no longer accurate. I will fire five "foulers" before I do the first work up. I am waiting for the Talleys and the scope.

I'm not buying the QL data. Hodgdon list 51.o as max with 150/155 gr bullet. I've run 51.o and the 155 Scenar for a chronoed 3,025 fps in a 22" bbl. No pressure signs. It moves 130 and 150 pills right along.

Thanks for the report.

Hows the accuracy?

Shot my M1A with most of the powders listed in this thread and 4064 consistently has been the best performer by a wide margin. Varget just never seemed to ever be in the running for me for some reason, which I thought was strange....everybody loves that powder!

IMR4895. Hands down the best for me. And I tried them all.

AR Comp seems to work well too. I put 41gr of it behind a 175 and had a velocity SD of 4 fps over 10 shots.

When Varget was hard to find, I read on accurate shooter that some shooters tried it. When varget became available they didn’t switch back.

I tried it and won’t go back to Varget. I found it to be very accurate and consistent in all temperatures. Here is a quote from IMR’s powder profile:

There is virtually no change in velocity with modest or extreme change in temperatures. The ballistics group at IMR has tested this powder from -40 to +165 degrees Fahrenheit with virtually no performance variation.

Out of all the powders I've tested W748 and Alliant PowerPro 2000-MR produced the best velocity & accuracy.

About 90% of the High power match shooters I know use VARGET. IMR 4064 and H4895 are also good but 4064 meters a little harder.

Gary Anderson, the national champion, used to say that the way you determined if your .308 was accurate was to load up 41 grains of 4895 and a 168 Sierra MK. If that load doesn't shoot, just replace the barrel.

Varget works well but H 335 works in both 308 and 223. Hasbeen

The varying results for different people with different powders just shows that we absolutely can't make absolute statements.

I also tried Varget when it came out and my reaction was "meh". It gave good accuracy and velocity but didn't really do anything that Reloder 15 or IMR4895 weren't already doing and I already had several good loads for multiple cartridges worked up with those two so didn't see a need to start stocking one more powder. Actually 748 gave me the highest velocity with excellent accuracy - this with 150 grain bullets - but it leaves a lot of powder fouling, same as H335.

IMR4895 is so versatile across so many cartridges and keeps it's accuracy well when downloaded a tad that's what I've stayed with, although now that I finally found another 8 pound jug of TAC I may go back to that for top end loads.

But as I said in my first post, the nice thing abut the .308 is that it generally isn't finicky at all and will perform well with several powders.

Varget is my go to powder for medium cartridges. I tend to load down a smidge to get best consistency.

TAC or varget for me. Tac meters well, varget needs to be trickled for each throw.

Umm, I think if I had to try only one, I"d probably go with Varget...
