for standard 205 for 2 brrl combo 230 and 3 brl for around 270 but as i read on the forums here or at accurate reloading the handi rifle don't use an extractor any more

if the handi is what you can afford, go with it, but chambered in a rimmed round. they work just fine, and can be had in yute stocks, which can be swapped out later for adult ones.
any chance your youngster could try out some other folks rifles? could be a bolt gun or something else might draw the kid's eye.
you can always go used on a good bolt gun that'll be 75 or so more than a new handi ...

whitey, if you're talking .22 rimfire, then i'd sure look at a ruger 10/22 or one of the better marlin bolt guns ...
lots of fun to be had there ...
