Does anyone know why Savage went to the detachable magazine ,,but still made the "e" and "a" with the rotary receiver ?

I'm sure the C-model was an attempt to keep making the 99, but make it more affordable to manufacture. Plus the box magazine was easier to switch for different calibers.

They had 100 years of tooling, templates, parts and experience making the rotary magazine, I'm sure that's why the E model remained in production as long as it did.

Wasn't there something with Pennsylvania back in the 60's or so that led to removable magazines and pump action 760's being the go-to rifles?

I thought the rotary model E was their attempt to make the 99 affordable?

I'm so confused.

The sensuous C was an offering to compare with the elegant 88, and beautiful BLR.

Savage advertising claimed they introduced the 99C so that the user could carry a second magazine for a quick reload. I think it was cheaper to produce but then the 99E sold for less. There were some other shortcuts on the E to save money. Maybe it was a marketing thing to produce a variety of rifles with different features. David

Corporations don't do stuff like this for altruistic reasons.

I think the C served two purposes for Savage. It was obviously cheaper to make, but it also provided some product diversity within the 99 line. Remington and Winchester already had detachable mag guns in their 740/742/760 and 88/100 series, respectively. So what the heck, why not.

I don't know if it related but we can't hunt with semi-auto rifles here in Pa. Magazine type doesn't matter, a tube fed semi auto is just as illegal as a AR 15 style rifle for hunting. Rifles must be "manually operated". I've no idea how long that has been in effect but it was there when I started hunting in 1973. We have no restrictions on magazine capacity, if you have a 30 rounder for your Rem 700, you can load it fully.

Remington 760's are often called an Amish Machine Gun.

My Dad won an 06 Remington pump in 68, I think, from the Deep Creek Lake VFD. I seem to remember him saying they didn't give away an auto because so many guys from PA bought tickets, and couldn't use them to hunt, Joe.

Legal hunting, that is. I knew a poacher in PA back in the 70's who used an M1 Garand, until he got popped in one of those fake deer by the road traps. Lost his gun, truck, and the right to hunt for six years. He went to the respective auctions and had shills buy his M1 and his truck back- and went back to jacklighting for a while. Now he's a township supervisor. (Back then PA held auctions wherein property seized from lawbreakers was sold instead of destroyed, including guns. One of my uncles regularly bought guns at those auctions to flip.)

When I lived up there in the 70's and 80's a lot of my buddies groused about not not being allowed to use semi-autos to hunt with. It didn't bother me too much as I was primarily into single shots for hunting back then.
