I'm a newbie as far as Model 99's go, so pardon this question. I have got it in my mind that I have to have a .250-3000 or .300 Savage 99. I looked at one today in a pawn/gunshop. It had a small latch on the underside, and the seller said it was a takedown. He didn't know when it was made. I left my glasses in the office, so couldn't read anything on it. Any ideas?

The takedown feature didn't make it through WWII so the rifle you were looking at is pre war. The serial number would assist in DOB. Also some description of the stock and checkering if present.

Takedowns started somewhere around 1909 (think I saw a SN of 7x.xxx that was takedown though), and stopped before or during WWII. Lots of different models it could have been, also, so need more info. Pistol grip? Checkering? Front sight style? Barrel Length? As above, SN will narrow down when it was made.

That said.. probably the most common takedown model is the 99G. Pistol grip and checkering, commonly found in 300 Savage, less often in 250-3000, 22 HP, 30-30 or 303 Savage.

I haven't seen that number in a long time around here, it's actually 70.3XX unless some one can top it, but it means you've been using the search function and taking notes.

Oh ya, I'd have to go with the 1899H as the most common T/D.

Actually, this was a different one (though I do remember somebody mentioning the 70.3xx one). I saw another one in the 70k's on auction last month.. sent a link to Rick so he could take note of it, but I'm too tired to look up my notes.

1899A T/D SN 79.985

The rifle had a plain pistol grip stock, no checkering, and a steel buttplate. I know the rear sight was a plain semi buckhorn. The rifle had about 75% finish on the receiver. Wear looked to be caused by hand-carrying. Lots of scratches on the barrel and stock. Oh, and the muzzle was shiny, probably due to the gun riding muzzle-down on some truck's floorboards. I couldn't see bore condition, but the action seemed to lock up tight.
The guy acted like he was doing me a favor selling it to me for $600. He may have been. Since I'm not a collector, just a fan, I am looking for a shooter. Caliber was .300 Savage, so I would have bought it if the price had been lower.
I could have taken a few pics with my camera phone, had I remembered it had that capability.

Pistol grip, no checkering? Okay.. I'm stumped on this one. Can't think of a pistol grip t/d that didn't have checkering, AND came in 300 Savage. Somebody search their Murray's, I'm thinking it's:
1) Refinished with all checkering sanded off
2) Replacement stock
3) Special order rifle with p/g and t/d.

Sorry, I didn't even realize I had typed 'pistol grip' till I read your reply. It definetly had a straight grip.
The wear and scratches on the stock make me think it was the original.
Even tho I didn't take it home, throwing it to my shoulder and lining up the sights has got me even more determined to find myself a 99.

Aaah.. whew, thought I was losing it there. Could have been one of several models; 99B, 99D, 99F. $600 isn't bad if it's got condition, but from your description it sounds a bit overpriced.

The sticky thread at the top of the forum about ordering Murray's book? Consider it if you're liking 99's.. worth every penny.

Hey Loggah : Looked over my TD's and have a 99 short rifle (22" rnd bbl), .303, Straight stock, no checkering, half-threads, #73,5xx. I know it's a few no's away from 70,3xx.
