I would suggest starting with a lighter bullet. I have a 9.3 and I much prefer shooting 250s over 285s from the bench. 285s aren't going that fast to begin with so there isn't much velocity to lose for reliable expansion. Norma makes 230 grain bullets which would help a lot with recoil.

30 to 35 grains of 4198 or RL 7..
ain't guaranteeing the bullets will open up on game, just recommending this as a reduced load combo...
for training, younger and female shooters, plinking etc.
regular LR primers.

NED, tHE #13 Speer book lists for the 9.3x72R as follows: 270 gr Speer SP, SR 4759, 21 gr.=1252 FPS; 25 gr 4759=1537 FPS. The loads for the 72 vs the 62 are w/in 2 grains overall so the ones above should be just fine. The Speer books almost always lists a reduced load for all ctgs. and bullet weights, generally in the 1700 to 2100 FPS range.-Muddy

shot some 170 grn Speers working up with RL15 yesterday. recoil was not bad at all but you really need to hold the bottom of the stock mid way down as that short 550 FS muzzle flip is really something was getting just a bit under two inch three shot groups with open sights at 50 yards which is a near miracle for my eyes.

SR 4759 has been discontinued if I am not mistaken, it was always kind of hard to find. I have switched to Unique for reduced/light loads in my .35 Whelen, with a 200-225gr. cast bullet I am using 15gr. it is an accurate fun to shoot load.

" that short 550 FS muzzle flip is really something."
The drop in the comb on those stocks are what turned me away from getting one. The original stock on my Husqvarna 1640 .30-06 was similar so I replaced it. Not suggesting you do the same though.
