Good Day,
Thinking that I might like a 22-250 or .223 to play with and cannot warm up to current crop of plastic stocked wonders, even though they are inexpensive.
I don't see much talk here about 110s. I am pretty sure that at one time Savage 110s could be had in nice walnut stocks and they must have shot...they are savages.
Any words of wisdom appreciated re 110s and if you have one in the back of the safe that you are thinking about parting with, please let me know.
Thank you,
Smiley

I don't know much about 110s but I do think that there have been some nice examples built throughout the years. Fireball 2 seems to be the man for all things 110 on this forum. Hopefully he'll be along soon to answer your questions.

Thanks for the misplaced vote of confidence, I appreciate it, but it's not warranted. 260RemGuy/Jeff and Deerstalker might be able to add a bunch to the discussion. I have and have had a few. DiamondJim, check with him too. Lots of these guys know em actually.

I've got a pretty cool one, 22-250, with nice walnut. Let me find it...

I'm rusty on 'em, but as I remember Remington adopted the 22-250 as a factory offering in 1965, the same year Savage went to pressed checkering from cut checkering on their rifle stocks.

I found this 1965/66 (IIRC) 22-250 with a press checkered stock and fit it to a cut checkered stock I had set aside. All that to say it's not an original cut checkered 22-250, which I doubt exists, but it's a beautiful rifle in my eyes. The stock was carefully refinished and is VERY smooth, and the checkering is untouched and sharp. It's also a shooter. I haven't hunted it, it was just a fun project to do. It still needs to be bedded better, something I will probably not do myself.

If you look for one of these early one's with the raised rear sight boss and the lightweight barrel, they are a nice handling lightweight rifle. Unfortunately the pressed checkered stocks got a little pregnant for my tastes, and I much prefer the slim lines of the older cut checkered one's. This one is a 24" vs. 22" of the other 110's I have, and if you look, it has no provision for sights, front or rear. No dovetail slot, no drilled holes.

All in all, I draw the line on anything press checkered in a Savage, so I would not be able to buy a .223 or 22-250 in a 110 unless I undertook this type of project to create one. I understand the triggers on these old one's are sought as replacements for the newer 110's. Just what I've heard, don't know myself not having messed with the newer one's.

You might consider a .243, there are a few more of those around in the old style with the nice walnut. The one with the pad in the photo above is 243. That sucker shoots less than 1/2" with Nosler 100 gr Partitions, no joke!

The newer 110's do nothing for me, so I can't comment on anything post 1965.

Don't know how much help that is, but there it is. smile

Check out the 14/114. I think it has a little nicer wood stock with a tip.

There's also the 11 lightweight Hunter. I have a lady Hunter stock I'm going to drop a 16 LHW barreled action into in the future.

Or, if you like projects, pick up a used rifle action ($250 - $300), screw on s profit 1/8 barrel $250 -$350, and pick up a Boyds or Richards microfit stock.

Not EXACTLY a 110, but close...ER Shaw Mk.VI(110 action) bedded in a 114 stock...this one is a .300 Winnie and not for sale, but it should give you an idea of what a Model 14 would look like... [Linked Image]

If you have an action Numrich has the stocks...

Or pick up a new one and swap out the stock as FB2 mentioned. The AcuTrigger seems to be a going thing. Anyone care to jump in on what might be a good vintage for the 110 for a guy looking to get into one? Did Savage ever make a 110 carbine?

Hog Hunter might suite you. 20" bbl with iron sights, oversized bolt handle, and top release.

There was a model 110-S (silhouette) made in 3-08 and 7-08, great target rifles, superb stock for off-hand competition, but a bit heavy for field work.

These early 110S evolved into the 112 varmint series, and they also became single-shot solid receivers.

I've got a 22-250 barrel that came off of a 110 and could probably be talked into letting go of it, if you find a 110 you like in chambered for something else.

I would guess that this is not walnut but the same mystery wood used on budget 110s of yore. I have a .243 in 99 but thanks for suggestions on 114s..they are very nice.
Just wondering where have all the nice wood 110s in varmint cals are.

Those are beautiful rifles you guys posted pics of....thanks. I am further inspired.

Changing demographic/market seems most likely reason for the shift toward plastic and stainless. Everyone is always after the latest whiz-bang thing in guns, and that's what's selling.... Pretty wood and polished metal have always been a premium in cost and availability, so they have fewer representatives in the market, both new and used.

I would stress the addictive fun to be had with playing with the Savage 110 aftermarket. Buy a used rifle in your preferred caliber, then start investing and adding in the details you like.

Here's a Marlin XS7 with a Boyd's stock (they take Savage small-shank barrels too!). Pretty wood is important!
