Welcome to the forum. I toyed with the idea several years ago,but concluded the cost of a motor, and drive system was more than just buying an electric grinder.Speed isn't as important as torque for this job,as simply turning a handle by hand at a 1:1 ratio is plenty fast. The thought of loosing a finger didn't appeal to me either so I opted not to build one.Probaly not what you were looking for,but there is my .02.

Thanks!I found a solution but not real safe.My Dad told me to try this.It does work ,but it takes time and patience.First jack your automobile up and lock the emergency brake.Attach your hand cranked grinder with a baler twine or breakable rope. the trick is to have the grinder at the same level as the rear wheel and centered on the rear wheel. We have ground 9 deer in the past 2 years this way. I am searching for a more convient way, but for those who can not afford a Hobart this is an economical grinding solution.

willzippy,
Just one question.
Do you leave the garage door open or shut when you are running that automobile/grinder of yours?

They make adapter wheels for the grinders for a V belt. Don't know what it makes speed but the wheel that we haev is probably 12-18 inches diameter.

I very recently saw on this here computer thing, an attachment for a manual grinder that holds and uses an electric drill to turn it. It sold for about $30, but I'll never remember where I saw it. Try Google...
I saw a movie where only the military and the police had guns. It was called Schindler's List.

Eight years ago, when I married my wife, I found a hand crank conversion stashed amoung her stuff. It had the converter pully on it and an electric motor on a nice mount. I though I was in seventh heaven. Until I tried it.
The issue is mecahnical and safety. It sounds like a good idea, but the bearing surfaces in the grinder were never meant to turn at the speed an electric motor will drive them.
The same bearings were never made to have the pressure of a belt pulling at them sideways. I call them bearing, but they aren't anything close to a bearing.
Then there is the problem of that pully and belt spinning inches from where you are feeding in the meat. One slip with one fraction of a second inattention and you might mangle parts of your hand.
I tried it, then put it back and purchased a grinder.

I see a grinder in Cabelas for $100 and a few other catalogs from $50 on up. That seems to be a lot less hassle.
