I am interested in having some custom work done to one of my 1911s. My first choice was Rock River Arms, but I called them and they said they no longer do outside work (just build customs from the ground up now). My next thought was Wilson Combat, who seemed happy to take the work. Anyone have any experience with them? Can anyone suggest a reputable smith for custom work on a Government Model .45 who doesn't charge an arm and a leg, and does good reliable work?

I've heard some bad stuff on internet forums about Clarks lately. Post this on www.1911forums.com and www.pistolsmith.com

I think I've decided to go with Springfield Armory's custom gunsmithing shop. Their prices are the best I've seen, and they have a good reputation. After all, it is these guys who are making the FBI guns. I've been reading good articles about this shop for years though, even before the FBI contract, so feel pretty good about the decision.

Make sure to post some pics of the final result. Can't wait to hear about how it turns out.

LSU Fan, I'd be happy to post pictures, if only I knew how.

The custom work is pretty basic. I have a 1927 manufactured Colt 1911-A1 Government Model .45 that I paid $300.00 for. It had a career in a national police agency of some South American country, but it is in pretty good shape. Looks like it was re-blued once. It is already very reliable, so little will be done to it in those terms. It is right now just as they came from the factory in 1927, that is to say, it has had no modifications. All I've done to it was install a set of stag grips, which look really nice.

Here's what I want done. First, I want bar/dot Novak night sights installed. Next, lowered and flared ejection port. Next, I want a beavertail grip safety installed, with a lightweight commander style skeletonized hammer, and finally I want it totally finished in Springfield's Armory Kote finish, which is a tough teflon finish much like Black T, but about $50.00 cheaper. That's it. Total price should be $500.00 on the nose, not counting shipping costs and insurance.

I don't want the front strap checkered. Don't want a flat mainspring housing. Might get a "match trigger" installed at some time in the future, with a nice crisp 3.5-4 pound pull, but for now I'll keep the GI trigger, which is pretty light and crisp as is, but a little short. But I want to save a little money, so I will have the trigger job done at a later date, if at all. It is low priority anyway, as the trigger is adequate at a crisp 5 pounds on the dot. Ideally, I'd like 3.5 to 4, but that will do for now.
