I used the 200gr Ballistic Tip on many Whitetails out of my 338winmags. Every deer dropped at the shot, regardless of shot placement or range. Get a can of H-4350 and you'll be set. I can't think of a better combo...

Hello Old Timer: Sorry I can't help you with handloads and the lightweight .33 bullets, but since lots of people do, you will probably get a few answer here.

Since you now have a .338WM, take a look at the story about a hunter in Alaska who got a few "bear bites" on the legs. He was very lucky:

H4350 is indeed a great choice, but another very fine powder with the 200 Ballistic Tip is, oddly enough, Reloder 15. Alliant and Nosler both list around 65 grains max, which is what I use for 2950 from my 22" .338. This load had worked great on all sorts of game from deer up to caribou, cow elk and gemsbok. Shoots very flat and accurately, and kills them quickly from any reasonable angle.

If you're shooting deer only at ranges under 300, 60 grains of R15 grains gets about 2700, which still kills great but doesn't chew up much meat. This load also works with the 200 grain Hornady, or even the 200 Speer, which at normal .338 velocities is more if a varmint bullet. Reduce the speed to a max of 2700 and the Speer works very well, dropping them cleanly but only "plowing a silver-dollar size hole," as Elmer Keith used to say. Recoil is reduced considerably as well.

I have never shot anything lighter than the 210 grain bullets in my 338 mag. I use the 180 in a 300 mag.
Most of my loads for the 338 mag are using a 210 grain bullet and a 275 grain swift A frame bullet. I use the 7mm mag in the 150 grain bullets for my deer gun nowdays.
