Anyone shooting Speer 150 grain bullets in a 308 for deer? Got a good deal on a couple of boxes, but don't see much conversation on Speer bullets. Thank you for any comments

That's a good deer bullet for a 308. They're stiffer than the boat tail version if you need to bust a shoulder or two, but will still work nicely on lung shots.

I've used the 150's on deer out of both the 30.06 and the .308 and their on game performance was excellent. I also use the 120gr in my 25.06 with equal results.

I was doing a lot of hunting load development last year for my Tikka T3 Lite using 150 gr. bullets. I only did a little work with the 150 gr. Hot-Core before dropping it due to the spotty availability. I ended up using the Sierra 150 gr. Pro-Hunter Spitzer instead. Bagged the biggest whitetail doe I've ever seen with the Sierra and the performance was perfect. Here's are the three loads I developed for the three bullets. The Speer load was showing potential but I ran out of time. I'll probably try it again with IMR-3031 and Winchester brass (more capacity).

Bullet: Speer 150 gr. Spitzer SP (Hot-Cor)
Powder: Hodgdon Varget 44.0 grs.
Primer: Winchester Large Rifle
Case: Lake City 68 National Match
LOAL: 2.700 (2.180 with Stoney Point)
Average Velocity: 2672.82 fps
Extreme Spread: 34.09
Standard Deviation: 13.89

Bullet: Sierra Pro-Hunter 150 Grain Spitzer
Powder: IMR-3031 43.0 grs. (30 April 2013 Lot #1637)
Primer: CCI-BR2
Case: Winchester
LOAL: 2.750 (2.205 with Stoney Point)
Average Velocity: 2799.94
Extreme Spread: 43.25
Standard Deviation: 16.34

Bullet: Nosler 150 gr. Partition
Powder: IMR-3031 43.5 grs. (30 April 2013 Lot #1637)
Primer: Federal 210
Case: Winchester
LOAL: 2.770 (2.174 with Stoney Point)
Average Velocity: 2794.50 fps
Extreme Spread: 34.92
Standard Deviation: 14.83

A three shot group with the Sierra at 100 yards. The Speer and Nosler Partition bullets were just as accurate. If I can find more Hot-Cor Bullets I'd love to try them with IMR-3031!

Better stock up while you can. Speer has discontinued the 257 120HC.

Used them for years and they always worked great. Switched to Barnes just because then Ca passed the no-lead law so our options are now limited. They were always very accurate and never had a problem with terminal ballistics.

I am continually astounded at how quickly people make up their minds on little evidence or none at all.

All I used for years in my HVA .308 (old Speer book Max loads I-4064 w/Mil. cases) then I got a job and started usin NPT 165 PP's. The Speer HC's are very useful in guns w/short mags. due to their short noses such as in Mod. 99's in 284 WIN. I shot a bunch of deer and B bears with them and my dad used the 165's (30-06) on several elk and moose, no problems ever.-Muddy
