Great find! Take good care of the box. It will soon be 100 years old. Is there a serial number penciled anywhere? Not many boxes left around from that period and it is in great shape!

I would like to add the serial to my data...post or PM, please.

If it's only 75-80%, you're a great photographer. It looks near new in the pictures.

Yes, yes! I'm not seeing the missing 20% at all!!

Oh man, is that nice. Had to wipe the drool off my keyboard.

Interesting that on the label the G is referred to as STYLE and the Model is still listed as 1899. Savage must have been using up the old pre-printed labels; but the STYLE nomenclature is interesting for denoting the G.

They were anything but consistent in their use of "model" at that time..

Yes Rick, the serial number is written in pencil on top of the box. 2430XX. I'll PM you the full number. The original owner's name and address is also written on the paper work. He was from the Pittsburgh area. The guy who brought this into the shop said he inherited it from his uncle, who bought it new. He told me he never hunted so it sat in his closet for over thirty years. I'd like to get it lettered to see where it was shipped.

I feel real lucky to have gotten this rifle. The shop owner had it in the shop for almost a week before I got to see it. He told me three other guys looked at it with interest, but all passed on it or told him they'd let him know later. He told them he was selling it to the first guy to come up with the cash. I didn't even hesitate. smile

In the box that came with this rifle was this wooden cleaning rod. It's not very straight anymore, and was repaired at the end. Does anyone know if any Savage rifles came with a cleaning rod? Could this be from the Savage factory?

I have not seen a cleaning rod that could be identified as Savage. I'm thinking yours might be home-made.

Very Cool. It seemed the factory labeled not only their model 99 rifles with Model 1899 but their boxes and literature were also mislabled Model 1899.Silly Savage must not have read Murray's book.

Funny how much a little cardboard enhances the value of a gun, well bought Joe....
