So, I bought a new rifle today. Of course it's Kalifornia and I have to way 10 days to play but whatever. It's darn near 100 degrees this week and I have zero desire to hit the range in that kind of heat.

So, I picked up one of these. I'm kind of a wood and blued guy but this has a certain attraction...

Now here's the fun part: It's really for my dad. He's 73 and likes to hunt pigs and the occasional deer. Not much for stalking so this is really a blind gun. Short barrel and a bit more weight makes it perfect in the blind.

I have a spare Leica 2.5-10x42 with a #1 in the safe...or a Leupold 6x36 wide duplex. Ranges where we hunt in Texas won't exceed 200 yards so this is perfect. I like the Leica for the big fat #1 reticle - his eyes being what they are and hogs loving the late nights...it may not be tactical but it darn sure is effective. By counter, I also really like the 6x36 fixed - just nothing to screw with. I figure I'll give him the choice.

Anyway, I'm looking for a .308 reload for pigs and Texas whitetail. I think 150gr. is the right weight at a reasonable 2700-ish velocity.

I have 414, 4350, some Big Game in the cabinet. I'm thinking a good ol' Hornady 150 IL is a good answer.

Thoughts?

Personally,I would mount the Leica for a better night time scope and reticle. It isn't like you are trying to make a light rifle with the 6X36.

You might even try the 130 grn Barnes bullets for light recoil.

R_H_C is right again. I usually hunt with variables turned down, but like the high end for load testing. If weight was an issue, you wouldn't have gone or that big ol' fat barrel.

Never been a big 700 fan, but in my son's old room there's a corkboard with a target pinned to it with three .308 holes clustered in just about a half-inch. It was fired at 200 yards with an SPS .308 he bought from the store he worked at. It's the only target he kept, but not the only one like it he fired that day.

Of course he let that rifle get away to satisfy some other desire. Like father, like son.

Those powders you list are slow for 150s. Nosler has 4350 data for 165-168s on their site. Varget, R15, H4895, 4064, etc would be more better. If you want to use what you've got, go heavier. Check Shooter's Pro Shop for Nosler blems, premium bullets at c&c prices.

The 150 Interlock is a good 308 bullet, but the powders you mentioned aren't so great for this application. Thankfully there are a bunch of powders that are great for this, and the 308 isn't picky.

See if you can get your hands on some TAC, Varget, H4895, Benchmark, IMR8208XBR, IMR4895, IMR4064, IMR4320, IMR3031, W748, RL15, ....

You get the drift.

I have the Compact Tactical - basically about the same thing. Person I bought it from had stuffed into into an LTR stock (HS Precision). Loved it so much I bought an LTR in 223 and used the basic blueprint to build a 260. Great rifles for stand hunting and shoving out the car window when the occasional varmint obligingly stops to look back over it's shoulder....

I've had much better luck with the 165/168gr range of bullets in my .308, settling on a Varget load under the 165 Nosler BT. If you haven't already, read through the .308 Load thread in the Big Game reloading section - lots of good info there. That is why I opted to try Varget - it seems to be a consistent favorite.

I'm a little confused as to why. I have both the XCR CT and LTR. Other than color the stocks are pretty much the same deal.

Thanks guys, all great stuff. Mathman, thanks for the tip on the thread.

If it was me and my shoulder I'd probably stuff it with a 180gr. bullet and be very happy. But in this case I'm loading for my dad and he's becoming less a fan of recoil. Which is, candidly, part of the reason for a big, heavy barrel.

Thanks for the powder tips - I'll have to head off and see what the local gun shop has in stock. Off to read the .308 thread now!

A Hornady TAP 110 at 3,100+ should slacken any pig with head & neck shots out to 300 yards from that rifle. Kicks less than a .243 in an LTR.

If you like to eat hog brains, however, use an elk load.

155 Scenar with enough Varget behind it to drive it 2750...

Or any other bullet/powder combo.
