In 1972 was moving back here from Florida, stopped at the West Campground in Yellowstone couldn't sleep so I decided to drive on. Made it to the North Campground at about one AM and saw a cougar at the entrance to the Campground with people sleeping in the Campground without a clue as to what was lurking near them.

A couple of years ago on a Memorial Day weekend came home to find the neighbors standing in the road in front of the house watching a cat trying to get our Siamese Cat hiding up under the hood of an old Ford P/U in our back yard with the Sheriff's two grandkids playing in their yard next door.

Gotta' love the conservation ethic here on the Campfire.........

You're okay with lions taking an occasional child? All the animals in the world aren't worth the child of a reasonable couple. And yes, I exclude certain as unreasonable.

Of course I'm not okay with it, you idjit. But then again we should get rid of all those bison that kill and injure more people than any predator in Yellowstone. Or kill all wildlife because they carry disease and a child might contract it and die because of those disease ridden critters.

Our high country place is covered up with bears and sometimes cougars--learn how to live with them, they're an imprtant part of the landscape.

When I worked on a cougar study in the 80's folks were always surprised when we told them we routinely tracked cougars inside of city limits. They crossed the valley often.

Very few people ever saw one.

Mountain lions are actually "SEEN" so rarely around here, that a shoot on site policy wouldn't even dent the population.

Couple years ago I came up on one at near spitting distance. Fugger looked huge.

It was snowing big fat flakes and eerily quite. I just kinda saw it standing in a grown over two track off to my left out of the corner of my eye. I stopped and turned and I think we both about schist ourselves at the same time.

It jumped nearly straight up and just flat disappeared. I was staring straight at it and couldn't tell you which way it went.

I need to try calling one in this fall.

I like my wilds, wild. I'm glad we have wolves, bears and lions.

You should be more nervous driving/flying to camp than of the animals once you get there.

Just because an animal is scary or has the potential to harm a child doesn't mean they should be extirpated. I like the wild places because they're wild. I'd prefer to take my chances out among the lions and tigers and bears than I would in Milwaukee or Chicago.

We had one appear in our metropolitan area a few years ago frequenting a golf course & adjacent soccer field. There was no wilderness of any sort for hundreds of miles in any direction.

Should be the other way around.

It ain't. I don't blame animals for being animals, just as I have no reason to go out of my way destroy them.

I also don't like having to show more justification in shooting a critter than I do a person when threatened.

This place sometimes amazes me. I thread started about a child being attacked by a wild animal goes straight downhill to personal insults.

I understand why so many great people who added a lot to the Fire had left.

Not aimed at you Steelhead.
