We would get Pell grants to cover books, tuition and expenses. The first checks came in late on a Friday. The following Monday schools and banks were closed for MLK/REL holiday. We figured out The Flora-Bama Lounge would cash those Pell checks. We called everybody we knew and had one hell of a shindig that became known as the first annual James Earl Ray Appreciation Day!
