Hey lefties, Savage has a poll on the front page of their website right now about what models we would want to see if they expanded their left-hand selection: http://savagearms.com/I'm really enamored of Ruger #1's right now, but I voted for the 14 / 114 American Classic, which seems to be pretty much running away with the poll results. Savage does cater to LH shooters pretty well.
The last Savage I had was a Model 340 in 30-30. That was about 30 years ago.
I've been nosing around for a light-ish utility rifle (nothing pretty) and I hate to say it, but the Savage blind-magazine stainless synthetic (16 FLSS, 116 FLSS) at 6.5 lbs seem like about what I want. No one else offers anything that light, or that utilitarian. The Rugers stainless/lam look good, but are a pound heavier. Remington offers nothing in a utilitarian stainless/synthetic. Browning are overpriced. Had one, didn't love it.

I bought a 16 FLSS about a year and a half ago in 243---my first and only Savage. It's not pretty but it does shoot well and tips the scale at a little of 7.5# with scope and sling. Overall I've been pleased with it and would recommend Savage. I've got a Remington LSS also that goes 9.5#. An extra 2# on the shoulder all day makes a big difference. 2Seventy

I have to agree, because I'm a lefty, most likely my next rifle will be a Savage. Fortunately, I think Savage is continuing to upgrade their product line.

I've been on (and still am on) a single-shot kick, but after my brother-in-law loaned me a pre-64 model 70 30-06 that I used to kill my first deer with this year, I've been warming up to bolt actions. Of course, his rifle was right-handed, and I would want a lefty. Savage does seem to have the most options for us, which is why I check their website out from time to time ... I've been waiting for them to bring out the Classics in left-hand, and then I saw this poll ... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> I personally never really found their rifles that ugly even before they brought out the Classics, just 'utilitarian' looking to me. If I wanted pretty, it wouldn't be a Savage American Classic. That's kinda like an ugly chick in a cocktail dress. It's still ugly.
Savage is strictly a utilitarian option in my judgement.

Out of curiosity, what is it about Savages that you guys think is ugly? I've just never gotten it, beyond thinking that the stocks are plain. I don't find the actions or barrels any uglier than anything else. But then, I guess I've never really thought that bolt-actions in general were the prettiest of rifles, so maybe that's why ...

To me they look very industrial and unrefined. The barrel nut, the bolt handle, the triggerguard, the bolt body. Pretty unrefined. That's what keeps the price down though. On top of that, they are far from smooth.
I can appreciate them like I can appreciate a Glock. A bit of an eyesore, but they work.

Savage is hit or miss in the feed area. I've got a left handed M12 that feeds one out of five times if you're lucky.
The ugly chic has to be good in bed,she has nothing else to offer. The ugly fat ones have it even worse.

I have had 3 LH savages in the distant past, all model 110's. Not a single one of them would feed. The thing I hated the most was the enormous amount of effort to cock the bolt. I would hope that todays models have addressed some of these issues. The new accu-trigger is definately an improvement over the originals.

You look down into the mag on a savage and you quickly understand why its inconsistant.
