Hello, I am wanting to put together a Mcmillan A5 build in a 22 or 6mm cartridge for longish range steel shooting and groundhogs. Not knowing anything about such a build what would you guys suggest. Barrel contour for balance, DBM, additional recommendations for parts would be much appreciated.
Probably going to buy a Stiller Predator or Tac 30 in stock from bugholes. Any preference on which action?
Would LOVE to see some nice A5 build pics and specs and what, if anything you would do different.
Thanks so much

McMillian A4. Like the flat forend better.Rounded forends are a step backwards.. Defiance Deviant.Go for the M70 safe.. 6.5x47.. you will get 2000 + rounds.. Seekens DBM.Seekens rings. Rock fluted Sendaro.1-8 twisted. I skip Jewell triggers on piss around guns. Rifle basic,Shilen,Timney. dave
Only accurate rifles are interesting.

A4s suck IMO. But that is why they make more than one model.
I would decide on what barreled action and weight you want first, then choose stock accordingly.
For heavy guns, I like a A3 or A3-5 for Rem varmint contour, depending on usage.
For #7 barrel or heavier, maybe sometimes Palma contour, A5.......

I'm doing a short action Defiance Deviant 6.5 GAP in an edge fill A5 stock with a sendero fluted 26" barrel. With scope it will be a hair over 10 lbs. Heavy enough to be steady but not too heavy to tote around.

The McMillian HBR. This was a 243 WCF. Throat fried in 800 rounds. It was fun. A 105g AMAX would turn a woodchuck inside out. It was also my last 243. I rebarreled into a 6.5-47 Lapua. The nice thing about a HBR is that you can bench the thing properly. The rounded forend stuff wallows in a front rest. Anything a A-5 can do. A HBR can do better. Like check a load or hit a target at 1000 yards. Give these guys a look. https://kineticresearchgroup.com/product/whiskey-3-chassis/ dave

Go shoot prone and then tell me the HBR is better. They are different stocks, for different things. Period. IMO the A5 is more versatile. There is a reason why they sell so many A5s.
Nice looking rifle Dave....

If/when contours get to or exceed a PSS/VS/Sendero...the A5 has no equal and in fact, nothing else is even close. I got 'em all. On a .378" it'd be 1-8" 223AI or 270" at no more than 21". On a .473",it'd be a 1-8" 6BR at no more than 21". Tough to whoop a DBM and it'd be AM steel 5's and MDT poly 10's in .378" and AICS steel 5's wearing Primal BR guts and AICS 10rd poly's modded in 6BR. AICS 5rd wearing Primal BR Guts. AM steel 5rd and MDT 10rd poly. I shoot 'em in both 223AI and 270. Stay fixed furniture in all regards, fill heavy as possible and you are golden in all contours from PSS to MTU,at lengths cited. 10x MQ in 'Horn rings, goes without sayin'. Just sayin'.....................

700 in 300 WM smithed by Terry Cross at KMW precision, mtu contour, badger m5, yadda yadda yadd. Mine sports his cheekpiece which locks up solid and the c-clip on the post ensures repeatability when the cheek is removed. I rather like it.

Have an A5 and hate the butt hook. Doesn't ride bags well. Would have gone a different route (A2 possibly) if done again. Maybe look towards a Manners as well.

I should have got an adjustable cheek rest and non-rotating QD swivels, other than that, I really like the stock and have no complaints. However, I replaced it with a T4A earlier this year simply for the adjustable cheek. I actually like the feel of the palm area and top area on the behind/side of the tang a bit better.

T4A or A5 Thanks It is really a tossup and I don't have a strong opinion. I don't think there is an appreciable difference between them. (For comparison, here is the T4A.)
