Advice sought from knowledgeable Kimber guys.
Will extra low Talley ringmounts - 0.300" height - work on a 84L Montana? Scope will be a Leupold with about a 1.6" diameter ocular and a 40mm or less objective lens (haven't made up my mind on the scope yet).
Will it still clear the bolt and the barrel or should I go with the low - 0.400" height - ringmounts?

I dunno about clearance issues with the XLows, but I do know the comb of the stock matches up real well with the regular Talley LW low's.
The CENTER will hold.

X-Lows will only work with a Leupold compact. The bolt will hit the ocular of the "standard" VX2 or VX3 if you use it.
Go with the lows. Bolt will clear the ocular and will work with a 40mm objective.

Thanks, that answers my question perfectly.

I put a Leupold 6x36 in Talley extra lows on a Kimber 84L Ascent. For my situation:
> Chamfer the front of the front base to set the scope back for proper eye relief.
> As mentioned above, a small scallop out of the top of the bolt handle to clear the ocular bell.
> Two layers of surgical tape in the bottom of the rings to keep the objective bell from contacting the straight section of barrel shank.
Overall a bit of a PITA to get it right. But, when I put the rifle up to my shoulder, the sight picture is right...

Ordered Talley Low Ringmounts and they came today. Installed a Leupold Compact 2-7X28 scope I had on hand. It just barely fits with the ringmounts set as close together as they can be.
Cheek weld is excellent for me. Doubt that that scope is the final answer because of the smaller eyebox and the shorter eye-relief inherent in the compact scopes. When I torque the rear ringmount to 25 inch-pounds the power selector ring binds up.
I have not shot it yet; but soon will to cure the Dyna Bore Coat. This will also help me to decide if it needs bedding. So far the magazine box does not bind, the front action screw is not too long nor is the screw for the front ringmount. Still have to lighten the trigger pull from the factory 3.5 lbs. (I'm following the two excellent posts by SAS and Brad on Montana tips.)
