I know that there are a lot of Leupold fans here, but I have found through experience that other scopes do work also. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
I might add I am totally familiar with most scope brands and have tried several different ones over the years. Certain models of certain brands have been good performers for me and as a result these models pretty well rest atop most of my rifles.
My question is, has anyone tried out a SII Sightron series scope. I looked through one the other day and I was impressed with the brightness and clarity, it seemed to give up nothing to a Leupold VX-II. This 3-9X46 carried a price of $169.99 which would seem to me a pretty good buy for a scope that carries a lifetime warranty and appeared as user friendly as it was. For that price I am tempted to try one. Any experiences with these scopes would be appreciated.
Many thanks

Hey Larry,
As you know, I am very loyal to Leupold. Not only is Leupold a world-class scope, but it the only one I never saw fail in the field during my guiding days. And, of couse, I live near Portland, so if I need any custom work on one of my Leupolds, it's just a matter of driving over to Beaverton and having the work done.
Having said that, I own a Sightron SII 4.5-14X42 with Adjustable Objective and have found it to be an excellent scope. The eye relief is non-critical, even at the higher powers, the view is really crisp, the colors are good and the 1/4" clicks are both positive and reliable. After testing the scope on a very accurate .223 Ackley at the range, I'm very impressed with the scope. There is absolutely nothing not to like.
I DO have a hang-up, however. The Sightron looks Oriental-ish. The Sightron doesn't look quite like the Leupolds that I've used for the last umpteen years. But then, my wife's Tahoe doesn't look like my Chevy Duramax truck ... and they both get the job done.
Yeah, count me as an admirer of Sightron. In my admittedly unlearned opinion, Sightron gives you a lot of real value for your optics dollar.
Hope this helps,
Steve

Larry -
Where did you find Sightron 3-9x46 SII's for $170? Great price. Are you sure it wasn't 3-9x42? I'm not familiar with the "46's".

I have a Sightron SII 3-9x42 scope on my 300 WSM. Excellent scope for the money and just as bright as any of the Leupold's that I own.

would love to know where you found that scope for that price. Please tell us so that we may also take advantage of such a good price.

You are right, it is a 42 objective. I knew it was but hit a 6 instead of a 2. The scope was at our local BiMart store.
Steve
Many thanks for your report also. I too, own a few Leupolds, mostly M8 4s and 6s. I use them because they have worked very well for me in the past and continue to work well.
I am glad to hear that you think Sightron gives good value for the dollars spent. Even though I know there are better scopes, if something gives good value for my money I am usually game to try it. Your response has me thinking about it pretty hard.

I don't mention the names of the name-brand scopes that have failed me (a sample of only one is far from typical or indicative), but none of my Sightron handgun or rifle scopes has ever been less than excellent quality.

I own a couple of them as well as Leupolds, Redfields, Better Weavers and several more. I have a 8 year old SII that is great. Low light transmission on par with some of my Leupolds. I also have a SI 3X9 that is a good scope. No failures. Crisp image. The SI suffers in ow light conditions. The SII is a mystery. I have looked at the newer SIIs and they are not the same bright and crisp critter that my 8 year old one is. We discussed this on another forum recently. Have they changed glass? I don't know but it sure looks like it. One thing I will give them. The windage and elevation are as precise and any scope I own except for a Tactical Weaver. The SII regularly suffers 54lbs of recoil and has never lost its zero. It is just flat out hard to beat a VX-III. I can post a link to a test where they were included if you would like. reflex264

Idared;
I've found the SIIs to be the equal, optically, or VERY close to it, of the VX-II series, if this helps.

That's what I've been using for about 4 years now. No need to replace it with Leupie or Zeiss. It will do the job.

The only problem I had with the scope was that the tube wasn't quite long enough to give me the eye relief I wanted. And that was with extended Leupold mounts. I think I put it on a CZ rifle.
The scope is quite good, though. Wish the tube were a little longer. I have an old Unertl hunter-type scope that has a similar problem; it was made back when long-action mounts were more closely spaced, and the turrents are up near the front of the scope. It fits, though, there isn't much room for adjustment for the eye relief.
Not many problems you can't fix With a 1911 and a 30-06

I have a Sightron 4.5-14 SII, and ironically, it is also on a 223AI. I love it! Great eye relief, accurate adjustments, and very bright.
I have seen the S1's and wasn't impressed, but the SII is a whole other animal.

I have a 6-24X42 Mil Dot on a varmint rifle - not as classy looking as a VXIII (the white and gold numbers on the AO specifically), but definitely a quality optic.

Well now that we are on the subject of Sightron scopes i am looking for a good short light scope to replace a very aging(but still good) 30 year old Redfield 6x that's on one of my trusty Remington 600 carbines and was looking at Sightron compact scopes online the other day. Anyone have any experience with the 2x7x32 SII compact??

VERY nice scope. IMHO, they are on par with the best of the compact variables of that power range, and fit quite well on light, compact rigs. The eye relief is decent, not great, but then again, in those type of scopes, they are never truly great.
For the money, a very fine scope for the purpose.

How much do you want for that old 6x Redfield?
