Down to 1 hummer---- I guess summer is over.Had a dozen or so all summer. They would empty a feeder (4 cups) in 1/2 a day. Jiggs, the border collie,(hence the moniker) loves to bark at them.We follow them north in the spring, I thought we might follow them south for Mickey.I'm 60 miles northeast of Halifax ,Nova Scotia
Every time I see, read, or think about humingbirds, my thoughts turn to Mickey. There's some folks that you just can't fathom are gone. Mickey's one of them.

AMEN that, he is sorely missed from this quarter.

Up in northern Utah, they started leaving with the August full moon - a month early. I'm down to the occasional migrator now, no more locals for the past four days. Saw a lovely little lady hummer yesterday feeding at the hanging fuchsia flowers. She apparently didn't see the feeder hanging the ther side of a porch post, which is how I know she was passing through.
As always, I'll leave a couple feeders up until the first hard frost just for any stragglers.
They were slow getting here this year, as discussed in the spring. We ended up having more birds this year than in the past dozen. I noticed on Wednesday that the majority were gone. We'll have some stragglers passing through but I think I've filled the feeders for the last time, this year.

I think of Mickey quite often he was a good man. When my time comes I'll finally get to meet him face to face.
The Hummers are still here but probably not for long.

We are in the midst of another pulse of migrants here. I am going through about 3-4 quarts of sugar water a day. So many different kinds, it's hard to get an ID on most of them. I like having the little birds around, even though my wife complains about the pounds of sugar that we are going through.

Some days it takes most of the day for me to do practically nothing...
Still around here in Texas. Loads of fire flies as well. A first for me to see here.
Same here. Refilled feeder yesterday. And LOTS of lightening bugs!

I have to fill the feeders tomorrow. We have several pairs still here hope they stick around a little longer.

Yes, sadly Wifey will soon consult the almanac on when we are to take the feeders in, they need to hitch a ride South, don't want them to miss the boat and stay too long.
We had 3 or 4 around all summer but for the last week to ten days we've gotten a bunch more and my wife and I were watching them going crazy this afternoon.

gunner, do NOT believe that crazy idea that leaving the feeders up encourages them to stay too long. If you take the feeders down, you are starving them just at the time they need the most energy. It's the equivalent of dumping out all your water just before you start walking across the desert.
They'll leave when their internal clock tells them to do. But when they do, they need every bit of food they can find along the way - or they'll die enroute.
