I got a terrific deal on some 175 gr Speer Grand Slams at a going out of business sale, and am looking for opinions on the bullets and load ideas. Potential uses are Hogs, Deer, Elk, and at this price paper and plinking.

Just to satisfy anyone's curiosity (and to gloat) I got them for $8 a box.

my first inclination would be win brass, rl-25, and federal or cci magnum primers.

Fire Plug, Good deal on what appears to be a great game bullet. Unfortunately, the two boxes I have bought (175 grain 7mm and 100 grain .243) have shot terribly.

In my 7mm Rem Mag, I tried H870 (which hasn't shot anything accurately), and RE22. Neither would group decent at all.

I haven't tried IMR 4831 but my 7mm loves just about everything that is loaded on top of that powder.

FWIW, I bought 3 boxes of 175 grain Partitions for $9.97 (a great deal if I must say so myself) a year or so ago and they are really starting to shoot well with H4831 and especially H1000.

You might try H1000 powders as both the Nosler Partitions and Hornady SP in 175 shoot really nice with that powder and Rem brass and CCI250 primers. GOOD LUCK!!! FH

I too have done this.

One thing's for sure, they'll never put NP's out of business, for accuracy, but they will all do MOE (Minute Of Elk).

IMR 7828, R22, AA3100, all do 1.5-2.0" for three shots from my 7mmMag.

For a guy that checks point of impact every two or three seasons, or whenever his wife suggests it, they're fine. For obsessed loonies on sites like this they're offhand practice bullets.

Thanks for some thoughts on these bullets. I will see how it goes, but the price was right and my old M70 7 Mag. has never been a finicky eater.

I got lucky as a kid with this rifle , the first new centerfire I bought, as out of the box except for trigger adjustment it hovers around .7'' at 100 with anything as long as I use H4831.

Budweiser2,

Thanks for the information. I had hoped to have some loads tested by now, but the holidays are a tough time to pursue individual hobbies.

I got some grat deals when the big local hardware stoped carrying firearms and accessories, but the sad side is that the laws are so stringent now that none of the hardware or ranch supplies can continue to handle anything gun related. The independant hardware stores are barely staying alive against the home improvement superstores, and now the silly laws are denying them some of the product lines that differentiated them.

Sorry about the soapbox time.
