He did this one in the name of global warming too... President Barack Obama said Thursday that he created the Atlantic Ocean's first national monument because the planet cannot be protected without trying to safeguard its oceans.
Obama announced the new Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument at a State Department conference.
"We cannot truly protect our planet without protecting our oceans," Obama said at the conference, which was attended by Secretary of State John Kerry and representatives of more than 20 countries who announced creation of their own protected marine areas.
Obama said dangerous changes in the climate, dead zones in oceans and unsustainable fishing practices means "were going to have to act and we're going to have to act boldly."
The Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument consists of nearly 5,000 square miles of underwater canyons and mountains off the New England coast. It's the 27th time that Obama has created or enlarged a national monument.
Supporters say protecting large swaths of ocean from human stresses can sustain important species and reduce the toll of climate change, but fishermen worry that it will become harder for them to earn a living as a result of Obama's move.
The White House said the designation will lead to a ban on commercial fishing, mining and drilling within the monument, though there will be a seven-year exception for the lobster and red crab industries. Anyone know how exactly having these huge areas of national monument in the oceans save anything from "global warming"? Is the water there different today than it was yesterday? It's about control and money. That's all.

This one is totally f-ed up. He did so under the "antiquities" act. With one stroke of his pen he cost the New England commercial fishing industry millions as of 2023 the red crab fishery is over, they only inhabit the canyons that are in this MPA. Obama said they (the fisherman) can just go out further, but the MPA is on the edge of the continental shelf where the depths drop to thousands of fathoms where life besides weird benthic creatures does not exist. PEW and the charitable land trust have Obama bought and paid for.

Lobsterman are a frigging loose minded bunch they have been known to shoot each other over fishing territories. Id wager Obama will get to know one. A man with his entire life's work washed away truly has nothing to loose

Good point. I bet they don't care. Its not a way of life for them as it is for the fisherman themselves. Probably its just a Job to them. They'll just get in line waiting for a handout.
