A few years before he passed away an old friend in his 80's asked me to help him clear some stuff out of his old storage building. He gave me a filthy, old Marlin 30-30 that was hanging on the wall. He said it had been there for decades.

The stock was rotten and the bore looked like a sewer pipe. I took it to my retired gunsmith friend who dated it to about 1905. He declared the action in decent shape and he was looking for a project so I turned him loose on it. He had the barrel re-lined and replaced the wood with some stock pieces out of his scrap bin and made a decent shooter out of it. This is the end result:

I've got few that I think are neat and or special to me.

An 1898 Krag Carbine serial #275000 on the nose. Pretty much all correct with the exception of an added recoil pad.


A special Husqvarna 9.3x57mm gifted from a good friend. All original with no import stamps.

My grandfather's Inland M1 Carbine that he supposedly dufflebagged home after the war.

When my old friend, Earl, came back from serving in the Pacific during World War II he moved to the mountains of Northern California. He needed a deer rifle and found a good deal on this 40-year-old Marlin 1894 in 25-20.

He shot his first deer with this rifle, but it took him several shots to complete the deed. He wisely purchased a Win. M-94 30-30 for his primary deer rifle. Later he mounted the Texan scope on the 25-20 and used it for varmints. He passed it to me shortly before he moved into an old-age home.

The 96-year-old version of the Kimber Montana is this first-year Savage Model 1920 in 250-3000. The metalwork is excellent and the action is as smooth as butter. The action is a mini-Springfield and the rifle weighs just over six pounds with the scope.

My rifle shoots 75-gr VMax bullets into five-shot one-inch groups, despite a very worn throat that decreases velocity about 100 fps with all loads. The Leupold Scout scope is mounted to a base secured in the rear sight dovetail, so no modifications were done to the rifle and it can be easily returned to original configuration. I have taken many ground squirrels with this rifle. For several years in the 1990s this was my nearly daily woods-walking rifle.

Note the split rear bridge that negates use of normal rear scope bases. Note also the slot in the rear bridge for loading with stripper clips.

One of the nicest presents my wife has bought for me over the years is this all-original Winchester M-1890 in 22 Short. Early in our marriage I was out of town on business and my wife stopped by a yard sale. An older gentleman was downsizing and was asking $125 for this rifle.

My wife didn't know very much about guns, but she recognized this one as being very familiar, since I already had a M-1890 in 22 WRF and a M-1906 in my modest collection that she had handled and shot. She was confidant that I would like to have it and thought the price was very reasonable (it was). So she bought it for me and presented it to me when I returned home. I estimated it was worth around twice what she had paid for it.

The rifle has a better than average bore and shoots well. It is special to me since my wife got it for me. In fact, tomorrow is our 38th wedding anniversary. She is my second wife. She tells folks that she is my trophy wife. And she is!

No pictures on hand right now, but I have a few cool old guns.

First is a 30-30 circa 1908 or so chambered in .32 Win Special. Long barrel, maybe 24" with buckhorn sights. Nice shooter. Had the opportunity to take a wild hog in California with it.

Another is a sxs shotgun that belonged to my great-great grandfather from Kentucky. It isn't anything rare but in nice shape with inlaid wood on the forearm, external hammers and damascus barrels. I have the leather case for it as well.

I also have a Winchester Model 64 that's pretty cool.

Interesting to me that there seem to be more Savage 1899's and slide action .22's on here than any other types.

my first CF rifle was a bubba'd '94 Swede, and I'd halfheartedly looked for one in original condition for years. found this next to a number 5 jungle carbine but could only adopt one.
