Does anyone know if I can cut a Montana X2 stock down to an LOP of about 12.5-12.75"? I have been told by MRC via their online question form that they cannot sell it to me with a custom LOP so I would have to do after the fact. I know that the Model 70 EW can be cut this far because I called Bell and Carlson to ask.

When my new rifle funds become available for my 7mm08 deer and all around (I of course dream of other hunts like elk, bear, but chances are it will be almost entirely whitetail which has to do with the caliber selection), I am still kind of torn between three options:

- MRC X2, but chop barrel to 22" and cut LOP to 12.5-12.75"

- model 70 EW SS, cut LOP , already comes with 22" barrel

- least likely - I have a Savage 11 with blued receiver that I can re-stock with a McMillan Edge and re-barrel with Pacnor, but I would still have a blued receiver and probably still have an insatiable itch for a Model 70 (or MRC 1999) and all stainless. I prefer to keep my rifle locked in truck bed during hunting season to minimize taking it in and out of a warm house and forming condensation, and last year I formed quite a bit of light surface rust on the savage when it was left in truck November - January.

I will likely save the Savage for a custom non-hunting build like a heavy laminate Stock with bull barrel 6.5 Creedmor instead.

No problem at all cutting it, you just might have to do a few more simple steps before installing a pad. If there are voids or gaps, just fill them in with fiberglass or bedding compound. You could even epoxy blocks of wood to accept the recoil pad screws. No reason at all that it can't be cut.

Easiest thing to do for a pad is use the online templates for the pre-fit pad after the stock is cut. See which one is closest. The Limbsaver pre-fit pads can't really be changed much. The Kick-EEZE pre-fit pads are very easy to sand down, if needed. You probably could just sand down the factory pad as well, if you like it.

Do you think I would be better off with the custom Savage, the MRC, or the Model 70?
