I received an email from Centurylink, saying someone had requested my email be shutdown and deleted. I called centurylink and they told me my email had been hacked and was being used to send spam email.
They wanted me to buy an anti-hacking pkg. since there server had been hacked. Of course they advised me that they almost got my personal information, credit card information, etc.
Has anyone heard of this? Does anyone know anything about anti-hacking sites, free or paid?
Any advice appreciated.

Who is Centurylink and are you using them for some online service?

Sounds like phishing! Change your passwords and get a good security software.

I got one of those early this year. Since I bought the "Geek Squad" service when I bought this latest laptop, I called them.
They said t was a scam and to pay no attention to it.
Come to think of it, the scammers had me to type some stuff into my computer and a window popped up with a bunch of addrsses and the scammer said that was how many hackers were using my computer at that time.
The geek squad guy said they were benign, not hackers.
Apparently he was right.

Call your provider and ask them. Likely the e-mail is an attempt to get you to divulge your info. Do nothing via e-mail or the internet.

He said he got the # off one of his bills - not on-line.

Missed it. Thanks.
Just wondering if the number was part of the scam too.

Is Centurylink your ISP or just your email provider? If they are your ISP, I would call your credit card company and have a new account and new card issued and then find a new ISP. If you are limited and not able to find a different ISP, at least get your CC replaced with a new account number and change your password. Invest in Spyhunter software. You can download it for free and scan your computer for any rootkits or trojan viruses on your PC. If it finds some, buy the software and they will remote in to your PC if necessary and clean it for you. After you get it cleaned, change your password again. Spyhunter ( http://www.enigmasoftware.com/)is money well spent. If I remember it is about $40/year and worth it IMO. You can cancel after your first year if you want to but if you get it you can have some peace of mind.

I've changed my email password and I'll check out the spyhunter. I'll change the CC number, too.
Thanks for the help!

Don't buy anything, that was a con in the first place. Establish a new email account with a REAL password, there are free programs you can get to generate and test the strength of passwords. Talk to your CC people.

I have centurylink too, they are the provider of the isp. Their line is a dsl that hooks into a wireless modem bought from century link and then goes to the various devices within the house. I have my email set up through them, although i am still using rather old programs on the computer. I think maybe somebody got your email passwords.
