Fortunately he was in a state where he could be armed to defend himself. Oh wait, maybe not.

He could have just smeared them with honey, that will make them go away.

It sounds like he will live and that is a good thing. A prayer sent for his recovery.

A small study area with trails and oak trees.

Perfect! Parade the fruits and nuts through the acorn patch at primetime!

Something is not correct with the story. Bears do not travel in groups. Adult bears are together only for breeding, certainly not this time of the year.

A female with cubs of the year would not have cubs big enough to be part of an attack. Cubs born to a female in April would not likely be more then 75 pounds right now. There is a possible chance that she could have a cub from last year with her but that would be very unusual. Even so that young adult should be 175 pounds max for a male and smaller for a female off spring. A female would not have been tall enough standing on hind legs to be taller then an adult man unless the man was quite short.

A black bear does not stand to attack, it lays it's ears back and puts it's head down for the charge and comes on full speed slapping the ground with one paw as it closes the distance. I know this trait all too well.

So the fella is scratched and "punctured" Hmmmm something is a bit odd with this. Black bears don't attack and chew you up to leave. They eat you! Or they would bluff and run. contact is simply so rare except for predation that I"m not seeing this story as it was explained.

It does not ring true with me either but I don't have near the experience you have.

Possible puncture wounds?

Bears bite, they bite a lot and they will grab and shake you senseless( 2 bears would pull you apart I suppose, if they attacked in a pack)

What do you think the odds of this guys only certain wounds being cuts and scratches are from? Falling off the trail and rolling down the hill?

A bear attack sounds way cooler! Unless the news story is so poorly written there is a lot missing here!

Where's Safariman when you need him?

The Mayans had it right. If youre going to predict the future, its best to aim far beyond your life expectancy, lest you wind up red-faced in a bunker overstocked with Spam and ammo.

Agree that bear attacks (at least all I have read) are destructive and vicious.

The guy was on TV being interviewed in the hospital and they showed some of his wounds. He looks fine, considering.

Bite and claw marks as one might expect, some in the arms and neck area but no torn muscle tissue that I could see, nothing missing. They're not too bad and are already healing. Some dog attacks are much more serious. They have closed the park and are looking for the bears.

The guy said that during the attack it seemed to him like the bear was mostly restraining him and just wanted him to be still and not move, and once he complied the bear let him go.

Seems like the attack was more of a warning to stay away from the cub I imagine, rather than a true homicidal intent.

If you're gonna get mauled by a bear, that's the one you want to draw...California bear...go figure.
