I stopped working for myself and shifted to working for a company in town...have far more time for myself and far less bills to contend with.
...and buying a bucket load more toys I have always wanted.
But I cheat as my wife has a government job in the education department.
These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

Agree. I have zero interest working on my own. I got a contract offer as construction director last week managing FLNG construction offshore Australia. Ain't many with FLNG experience... About $400K/year. Na, I'll pass or I would have kept on working.

I am just so burnt out on insurance and same old [bleep]. Too old to start over at age 36 and no real training in any one thing other than insurance. At 36 you are young enough to re-educate...as for starting over, I have managed to jump industries quite a few times when the mood took me. The trick is to not be too tied up with what you think you are worth, and just pitch in and go with what you have.
These are my opinions, feel free to disagree.

Too old to start over at age 36 and no real training in any one thing other than insurance. Holy crap, man - that's a defeatist attitude. I know folks that have 10-12 years on you that have gone back to school and prospered.

I'd look at benefits as much as pay. Nice taking six weeks off a year paid, 11 paid holidays, employer paid insurance, 401k match, defined pension, $70.00 per month phone stipend, etc.

Galt,
I went through the same thing a few years back. Financial services just wasn't paying what it was when I started, so I went back to school, finished my degree and now work in the Finance Department for a major Telecom company. It took several years to pull it off, but financially, it was well worth the investment.

I am just so burnt out on insurance and same old [bleep]. Too old to start over at age 36 and no real training in any one thing other than insurance. Mickey Coleman was older than you are when he ditched the insurance bidness, went to school to learn how to run a lathe and a mill, and started building some of the finest rifles out there. You're not old, just tired. As the Poobah might say "it aint the years, it's the miles." I started over at 50 and eleven years later I'm looking to start over again. Best wishes for you whatever you do. Ed

Too old to start over at age 36 No way. I did service, school, and lesser job or two until I was 35. With my service years (4) counting and a year of sick leave that counted as time also, I quit for good at 62 right on schedule.

First,...move to a country where they're not sending jobs off and bringing Muslims in.
Hungary seems to be getting popular.
No,...I'm not kidding.
