MrMd, Mule Deer touched on the same thing I was saying. It is the muscle mass behind the butstock and the bone that supports the muscle. Both are "usually" of a lighter nature in women than men.

Don't forget the 6.5x55 swede, I use mine on all kinds of animals; pigs, goatsand deer up to red stag size , they have a good range of bullet availiabilty and shoot the heavier bullets particually well, I use 155 lapua's on reds and they are dynamite, 129 hornys are great on the smaller fallow deer and goats, recoil is on a par with the 243, well in my rifles anyway. you could even have a winter project building or getting one built up from a military action.

If you are not going to reload I would suggest .243 or .260. Have used the .243 for many deer and chucks. Have taken several deer with the .250 and .257 (non +P). I could not tell any difference and don't think the deer knew what I shot em with either. Two of the most accurate rifles I have ever shot were 250s and one factory 700 would make nice little one hole groups with 115 NPs.

Well, I think I will buy her either a Ruger 77 Ultralight in 243 or 257 or a TC Encore rifle in 243. Are those Ruger 77 257s long or short actions? The TC sounds like a good idea because 1) it's light 2)every TC centerfire I have ever seen has been extremely accurate 3)When she decides to hunt elk, we just buy a 7mm-08 or 308 barrel.

On another note, I am now considering turning my old FN Mauser 30-06 into a 257 Roberts. Get myself another 30-06 and a 375 or 416 to go along with the Roberts, and I should be set for anything.

P.S.--My wife, who is now 7 months pregnant and had never even shot a gun until this year, is already talking trash about hunting. She told me she was going to shoot a deer before me next year and that her deer would be bigger.

MrMD,

Ruger Models 77 that come from the factory in .257 Roberts are long action versions.

If you're looking at a T-C single shot, you might be ahead of the game with a used T-C 87, or whatever they called it. The Encores seem a little rough to me when compared side by side. There is a place in NH, near T-C, called Fox Ridge Outfitters that is a "go to" for T-C stuff. If you do a web search for T-C, you are directed to fox ridge.

Fox Ridge is TC custom shop. I too am interested in the TC's and in all my research most claim that it is a BIG crap shoot when it comes to factory barrels. Check out the single shot pistol forum at accuratereloading.com. Those guys are some TC junkies! I don't know how much money is a concern, but Virgin Valley, Bullberry, Mike Bellm and Dave Van Horn turn out plenty of custom TC barrels and accessories.

MD, I've had a 250 Savage, several 243's and 257 Robert's as well as a 7-08 in a variety of factory and custom rifles... do yourself a favor, don't buy a Ruger Ultralight, especially in 257 Roberts... I've never had one that would shoot (cheap pencil barrel). Too, the 257 Rbt's in the Ruger is throated very long. Also, in such a light, short-barreled configuration, the UL "starts" to defeat the purpose of a light recoiling round.

I've had a hankering to build a 260 Rem as it seems to embody the best qualities of the 257 Roberts and 7-08, but in reality the 257 Roberts has always held me captive... it's just a great round. I agree with Charlie, it IS the King (or Queen) of the quarterbore's.

Also, if you're not looking to put a lot of money into this project, I've had ER Shaw rebarrel several rifles ($250 for their stainless barrel chambered and installed)... every one of them has shot very well and they can do any cartridge you want. Otherwiswe, the good Mr. Sisk here at the Campfire has an outstanding reputation for finely accurate, reliable rifle work.

Best Regard's,
muledeer,

When you say you find the .250 Savage "a little light" -- what do you mean in terms of real world consequences? Inadequate penetration, expansion ... ?

I would think a 100-gr. X-Bullet at 3000 fps would do the trick?

Brad,
Something like the Ultralight may be her only choice. She has a hard time holding the heavier guns in an offhand position. I'm hoping we can get by with a standard M77 with a slimmed down stock and Leupold compact 4x in light rings. We may have to go with a 243 to keep the recoil down in the light rifle (that's the reason I'm staying away from a down-loaded 7-08)

WELL-

If the 243 is now an option I would have to recommend the 243 or the 257 Bob.

My friend has a new Ruger 77 in 243, it is sweet! I want one now! Light fast handling and don't kick worth a hoot!

I'm loading him up some 85 gr HPBT for our small whitetails around here. Can't wait till he pops one with it! He was shooting a 7mm Mag and just blowing them (the deer) to bits and bruising his shoulder quite a bit. He loves his 243!

Whatever you are willing to put up with, is exactly what you will have.

When your ship comes in. ... make sure you are willing to unload it.

PAYPAL, sucks and I will never use them again. I recommend you do the same.

hey partner,
have her try on an m70 classic compact. it was a terrible fit up for me but on a smaller person, it might be just the ticket.. comes in several light recoiling chamberings; .243, 7-08, ,308. i have the m70 classic featherweight in a .243 and it is a real sweet little rifle. accurate, smooth handling..... the compact version appears to be a shortened up version of what i have.....john w

johnw,
Great suggestion, but one small problem. She's slightly taller with much longer arms than me, and I'm just under 6'. Otherwise, I would go with the compact.

i'm 6'7" and 345, it was a might small on me,too. seriously though, i think anyone of normal stature, or smaller, would be real comfortable with one. as i have stated previously in other posts, i am a zealous fan of the classic m70 action...... if'n you aint' already, i'd try one on her..... john w
