My FIL has a pre 64 model 70 in 270 win that he wants to sell. He does not do internet so he asked if I would help get some idea of its value. It has been hunted with and has some scratches and dings in the stock. The metal looks good with no rust. The serial number is 58458. Would be interested in any info you have as well as an approx value. Have a couple cell pics but they are not the best. Can text them if needed. Thanks Dennis

It really depends on how original it is. Pictures would help to tell the tale...

Post a photo if you want an estimated value. Serial number makes it a 1963 manufacture.

Pal, serial # is 58xxx. Meaning it is a "pre war"... Not too many rifles were made in 1946 as a result of the war.... Production was still very slow (about 7,500 rifles manufactured). However the OP may have misstated the serial number as well. This is where pictures really help to shine the light on the subject...

Ok. The reason I ask is because that would tell us if the safety lever has been changed. What determines the real value of a pre 64 model 70 is the originality, the rarity, and the condition. I'd hate to spit a number/value out on a rifle without a real clear description. It would also be nice to know the condition of the bore, along with details like if it's been messed with in any way. This includes any extra holes drilled in the receiver, glass bedding, unoriginal sights, missing front hood, original sling swivels, and ANY aftermarket parts. For example: An "upgraded" trigger can detract from the originality of the rifle and hurt the value. To give you an example of value, I've seen original pre 64's of that vintage and chambering sell for upwards of $1,000.00-$1,300.00 around here, even when they are not pristine, but used as they were intended. These rifles were worn, bluing was worn on edges, but everything was "honest" wear. No negligent harsh use (put it away wet and forget about it kind of guns), but honest wear and original. Then for the ones that were put away wet and used real hard, I've seen sell for $650-$850.00... Rifles (30-06 and 270 std wts.) with extra holes sell for $500.00 typically. Also keep in mind, these rifles are worth more in certain parts of the country..

BSA hit on the key issues and I concur with his price estimates.
Because of the serial number range, this could have originally been an undrilled rear bridge receiver (essentially, a pre-war style receiver). If this is the case, then the rear bridge has been drilled to accommodate the Redfield JR base. If it is the later "transition" style receiver, then the holes are there from the factory. This is a critical distinction that would significantly impact the value. A photo of the rear portion of the receiver would help confirm this.
If the receiver is unmodified, the bore is good, the stock is not cracked or altered, and any defects present are just honest wear, I think the value would top out around $800.
bsa....Thanks for the reply. I am not too familiar with pre 64 model 70's, but from what I could see and what I was told it is original with no missing parts. Rifle has not been abused and other than scratches on stock is in really good shape. BIL borrows it for Mo. deer season so it would be at least Thanksgiving before I could get more pics. Thanks
