I picked up a new Vanguard in 30-06 from Wally Mart. Decided I was going to run a 168 NBT over a case full of Hunter. I will say I am not a fan of the 30-06 and have resisted it even though I now own 3. After reading load data and some posts here I decided I was going to give it a serious chance.

I loaded WW cases with Rem 9 1/2M primers and 60.0 gr and 60.5 gr of Hunter. I also loaded the same weights with CCI 250 primers. Chronographing revealed 2956fps for 60.0 and 2990 for 60.5. Not exactly slow considering the 150 gr NBT factory load from Remington I used to run in my 7RM was 3050fps.

Accuracy was bad with the 9 1/2 primer loads. 2 1/2". 250s were at 1" or under. A vast improvement. I'm running the 60.5 gr load with CCI 250s for the opener this weekend.

After rifle season is done I'm going to do a little more tweaking but I'm pretty sure this will work.

What a boring cartridge huh? crazy

I'm running 60.5 of Hunter with CCI 200's and 165 gr Accubonds out of my 84L Montana.

It's my first 30/06. Never saw the need for one since I always shot the vastly superior 270 Win😀. But then I was wanting an 84L and traded into this one here on the fire. Great gun and I'm really liking the /06. Seemed kinda un American to not have owned one!

With the velocities I'm getting its hard to justify having a magnum.

I haven't shot anything burning more than 46 gr of powder in years and this took a little bit to get back in the swing so to speak. 14 years ago was the last time I shot my 7RM loaded "heavy". I've been running 120s in it since then.

When you start feeding an '06 handloads, it makes you question a lot of things.

I'm thinking of getting some 178 ELX horns for my 30-06.

57gr of H4350 and Hornady 180gr BTSP's made 2 nice holes in the bull I shot took fall. Makes nice little sub moa groups from the bench also. Now if I could just find some more H4350.....may just have to try Hunter.

. Nahhh that would be just silly ;-). I get it though, hunted with a Kimber Montana 308 Win last year, I could get rid of the others for that one. 130gr Barnes and mid recoil load of h4895 @42grs. Not much not to like about it.

Hard to beat those numbers. 2900 with 168 is some wicked medicine. I am thinking about getting an 06 for myself as well. Yes, they are boring, but they just simply work.

The 30-06 loaded to its upper limits with Nosler BT's is a fantastic 300 yard game rifle. I'm not at all surprised at those velocities from a 24" barrel. I routinely got 2944 from a 22" Remington with Hodgdons top load of H4895 and the Nosler 150 BT. At 250+ yards That load flattened a good buck like you had dropped a piano on him.

I was going to use my 6.8 exclusively this season but forecast is 20-30 mph winds with gusts to 40. Looks like it will be 30-06 and 260 Rem.
