No elk properly hit with either would know the difference.

I'd pick the 7mm, because I have one.

I agree with Pharmseller.

I think the question comes down to the gun on that one. They are pretty much the same after the shot. If I was limited to one gun for deer and elk in the west the WSM you are suggesting would be about perfect.

But who here stops at one Rifle?

For Big game deer/elk mostly I shoot a 7mm of one type or another or go bigger with a .338.

Whichever rifle I liked more. Both rounds will serve well

The .300 WSM will kill elk instantly, but bullets from the 7mm Remington Magnum will bounce off.

Or is it the other way around?

Jeez, I can't remember. I read it on the Internet, though, so it must be true.

The way I heard it, bullets from a 7mm RM are going so fast they don't have time to expand so they zip right through the animal.

And that's a true statement - not the part about zipping through, but the "I heard it" part. Someone once told me that with a perfectly straight face.

Yeah, I heard to--about 40 years ago about the .270 Winchester. The guy was one of my elk-hunting mentors, a firm .30-06 guy, and he was serious.

At 500 the 7mm drops .7" less, the 300 has 142 ft lbs more energy.

Most people don't really want the truth.

They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

Sounds very similar to a lot of the stupid crap regurgitated on this very forum for people to justify their own preferences and choices.

If you own both rifles you should know the answer...

But at 500 yards my 30-06 loaded to full pressure doesn't give up much to the WSM.

I have a WSM and I like it, but if I load the 200 AB in the 30-06, at 500 yards the two are about the same.

Small differences don't matter.

I'm not a fan of WSM cartridges, but between the two, that is the one I would choose. The 7mm Mag has a reputation for being a little unpredictable in load development, as does the 243 and the 338 Lapua. Other than that, the critter on the receiving end would never know the difference.

For me it would be the 7mm RM. Because I don't like short cartridges. But the 300 WSM would Work fine.

It is more of a preference thing than an actual "one is better", they'll both work.

I prefer classic.

I like short actions, so a WSM. I have a 300wsm in a finnlight and it is a gem.

This question must mean you didn't get a tag this year.
I would use a 300 win. or a 7RM because I have them. Last time was with a 270 WSM loaded with Barnes 140 TSX.

I usually take two rifles and it could be any of those above three plus .375H&H or .280AI. Depends on my mood at the time of packing.

300 WSM.... 'cause there's been one in the safe since 2004; been handloading it since '04 and have some "pet loads" and because I don't own a 7mm mag., (but I've always admired that round). So as a lot of others have already said; Either would be sufficient.

Both will work, granted. But, I'll take my 30-06 with a 200gr Partition or Accubond. I know not the answer you were looking for, but there it is.
