Another vote for the Leupold 2.5-8x. Simple and rugged with good optics; it's held zero well with absolutely no issues.

Illuminated, reliable, and under $600.

A few years ago I ran a Burris Euro-diamond 2.5-10 with the illuminated #4 on an Abolt 300wsm for elk. It was a really nice scope, if a touch heavy.

I like the Leupold 2.5-8x36 on my 300WSM Kimber Montana. It's my dedicated Moose masher.

Check them out.

Well,

The Leupold VX3i 2.5-8x is a non-starter.

I ASS-U-ME'd that the "i" in VX3i meant illuminated reticle. It apparently does not.

Illuminated reticle is a "must have" for me on this rifle.

So I may be back to the Vortex.

I just noticed that the Leupold 110685 VXR 2-7x33mm Scope has an illuminated (firedot) German number 4 reticle and can be had for less than $500 if you shop around.

Does anyone have experience with this scope?

I wanted 8x on top but have actually never used more than 6x on medium or big game even though the scope on my .270 goes up to 10x.

Only scope I ever used on all of my 338's was the Leupold 2–7X33… I can only imagine this new one is even better. Where I doing 338 today I would put a straight six on it.

More than a little out of the price range being discussed.

I also ran a 3.5-10x44 Conquest on it for a couple years. That was pretty good, but I'm tellin' you, at this price point the 3-9x40 Conquest is an amazing optic on a long action rifle with some recoil. Miles of constant (more or less) eye relief, huge FOV, bright as heck, very visible etched reticle.... and plenty of tube length for mounting.

I'm also running a 3.5-10x44 Conquest on mine right now and really like it. I'm sure the 3-9x40 conquest would be just as good though and a lot cheaper...

Put a SWFA 1-4 on my 9.3x62. I like it a lot actually. Planning on one for my 375 next. For big game shots out to 300 yards, I'd have no issue with it. Eye relief has been plenty for me on the 9.3 and expect it would be fine on a 338 as well.

1-4 SWFA on a 375 is an awesome combo. cwh2 let me borrow his for a Brown bear hunt in June and it was perfect. The illumination is a huge bonus.

I went with the 2.5X8 Leo.
No relief problems with my light weight .338 Ruger.

I've been looking at the Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x44. It seems to fill the bill and can be had for $600 or less.

What has been other's experience with this scope? What other scopes in this price range and fitting my requirements might be a better choice?

Unless I'm missing something, the Leupold 2.5-8x and the Zeiss Conquest are not offered with illuminated reticle.

Is that the 338 RCM or Win Mag? If RCM what's the weight finished.

Perfect choice if you're in need of illumination.

I have a Swaro Z6i 1.7-10x42 with a circle dot reticle on my .338 Win. It served me well on a 2012 leopard & PG safari where the longest shot was 312 yards.

One of the optics dealers is having a sale on the Meopta 1.5-6x42 with an illuminated reticle somewhere in the $700 range. If I didn't already have the Swaro, I would buy that.

I'd go 2.5-10 or something similar.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

What reticle ?

Standard duplex type reticle. My 4th S&B....love em.

I think you would like the Leupold VX3i 2.5-8. I put one on my .338 RCM.
