Planning to have a new rig built. It will mainly be used for whitetail hunting in Texas. We have lots of areas where we hunt that can be 300-400 yard shots. Have a couple of large caliber guns that will do the job just fine, but I don't have a 6.5 and really want one.

What do you suggest?

I love my Swede. Using 140 grain Berger Hunting VLDs I get great groups at 100 yards. That is over 40.7 grains of H4350 and a Federal Large Rifle primer. This is the rifle I am best with.

A Creedmoor will match the 284 out to about 500 but after that the extra speed of the 284 will deliever a harder punch further downrange. I have a CM and for WT deer hunting it's a great round!. OBTW I shoot the 143 grain ELD-X. Both calibers can be very accurate out to 1000 yards with the proper set up.

Of the 2 listed I'd go with the 6.5 CM. But I 'd seriously consider the .260 Rem as an option between the two.

Agree.

I have 6.5 CM, 6.5-284 and Swede. I like'em all, sorta depend on the individual rifle.

The 6.5-284 does have an edge at extended range, but not a lot.

Which one I use depends on what I'm hunting.

Another vote for the Creedmoor. I like how well mannered it is and as was stated above, out to 500 yards, there's little to no difference. I shot my Wyoming Pronghorn with mine at 210 yards. DRT.

I like the .284 case.
According to the Nosler RELOADING GUIDE the 6.5X284 starts the 140 Accubond out at 2953 whereas the Creedmoore starts it at 2730. (max loads) The 6.5X284 is 223fps faster.
IMO 200fps is enough to be significant. Significant at all distances.

.264 Win Mag for me.

For you I would go with the Creedmoor.

Unless you reload then I would go with what ever the hell you want.

Yes a 25-06 is very comparable to 6.5 CM.

6.5x47 Lapua.....

If all options - rifle, ammo, etc - were equally attainable in the economic sense, then I'd agree with aalf. But in the real world of availablilties, the Creedmoor wins. Way more support for it than any other 6.5 cartridge out there. Hell, even Winchester is offering ammo for it now. It is the darling that the 6.5x47, 260 and 6.5/284 all wanted to be.
