What are your reviews of the 17wsm ? Seems like a neat little round.

It should be, but seems like several issues. The cartridge is bigger, wider, than other rimfire and will not fit in many (or any) popular guns. There is savage and that is about it right now.

I think the lack of guns has held it back. Ruger did a Model 77, then discontinued the whole line. If you could get it in a Ruger American and CZ that would make all the difference. Obviously no semiauto. The savage had some serious problems when introduced and that hurt. That is it, basically a one gun or else I am sure some one will correct me.

The 17HRM is popular and most seem satisfied with that.

I personally dont like any .177 caliber. This odd ball round in a one caliber family. I mean they could have done a whole family: 17,22 and 24 WSM but its a 17 only deal.

I read a few comments about how it would be less cost and more power to just reload one of the Hornets. Personally, I consider reloading these small rounds a waste of my time. But, some say that.

Bottom line, the future is in doubt.

Edit:
I though of one more way to look at things. In addition to 22mag, I have a 223. That does not leave much need for me to split the difference with a rimfire. The 223 ammo can be very good or very cheap. Those with Hornets already, probably the same deal.

I think I agree with what your saying I have been kicking it around but I think I'll look for a 22 hornet or 222 I have owned a 221 fireball and didn't care for it on coyotes which we hunted a lot of at the time , now it's more fox and cats, might go that's route again , thanks for your reply

If you are thinking about either of those you should consider the CZ527. For the hunting you plan, I recommend the CZ527 carbine. They did offer 22Hornet and 222 in some models of 527. I dont know which for what and which are in current production or planned 2017. Worth a look.

fourbore,

I would pick up a CZ 527 in 17 Hornet anyday over a 17 WSM.

For 2017 CZ is going to change from the detachable magazines to standard bottom metal. They are going to be "phasing" them in... meaning they probably have a bunch of the existing models in stock. Not sure which calibers of the 527 they are changing, or if they are changing all of them.

They are also bringing out a 6.5 Grendel (and the 7.62X39) in the American 527.

Someone else wrote on the 'fire' that they were changing the safety to the 'American' style (forward is fire)... but I have not seen that anywhere else, but hope it is true. This would eliminate my bias against them (CZ 527's).

We'll See,

Jerry

I have a Savage b mag sporter. In hindsight, I probably wouldn't buy another particularly knowing the challenge the of gunmakers (it's a ground up design due to higher pressures ) That said, I like it well enough to keep it. I'd love to run across the Ruger 77 version for about $450.

Seems like it is going the way of the 17HM2 to me. The .17HMR seems to be the winner in the .17 cal Rimfire battle.

thumbs down on any 17 rim fire--I love my 17 remington centerfire though--its like shooting a laser--wish I could afford an AR upper to shoot it but the ammo is too $$$$ for semi auto fire unless I hit the lottery tonight

I have a love/hate relationship with my Bmag. I love the 17wsm round but I had to way to much work to make my rifle a decent shooter. I had to buy a Boyd's stock to replace the POS stock they come with. I bedded the action and did a few more minor mods to make it a decent shooter. It is not a tack driver but I do enjoy shooting it. Coons and possums shutter at the sight of me. I have even earholed a few hogs with it. I do wish Ruger would produce one in the American series. Savage should be shame they released such a cheaply made gun.

I see quite few new guns on gun broker (527 American in 17 hornet).

I guess these guns have the safety you dont want. I would not be too sure any new and improved 527 was a better gun. We will see. The 557 is a sorry replacement for the 550. Same with the 455 that replaced the 452. Both a disappointment.

I don't think the 557 is supposed go replace the 550, just cost less. The 550s are a little pricey these days, but worth it, I think.

Had a 455 for a bit, but prefer the 452/453. The switch-barrel feature wasn't quite as handy-dandy as it seemed at first, and the Long Rifle barrel wouldn't run with the 453 I bought, by a good bit.

I think the 453 represents he pinnacle of Brno and CZ rim fire rifles. I was lucky to get a nice example from the last batch to come into the USA.

I hope you are right about the 550. I see less models each year.

Same here..

I've had a .17 Rem for about 25 years now and absolutely love it.. 25 gr. bullets at 4,000 fps just explode prairie dogs..

This fall I had a striped gopher in the yard at about 100 yards. Wind was enough that I couldn't get a decent shot at him with a .22rf, so I brought up the .17 Rem. One shot - and the only remains was the bottom half of the little varmint..
