What's the heaviest bullet that's safe to use in a 629 with the endurance package?
ETA: I've got a 4 in. SW 629-3 that I love to hunt with. Have taken 3 deer so far using the 240 gr. XTP bullet. Would like to try out the 300 gr. XTP for more penetration (2 of the 240s didn't punch all the way through).

You can load it "slow" or "hot", so the bullet itself is not a limiting factor.

Mike I was thinking about loading it with around 19 grains of W296 which was towards the top end of Hornady's published load data.

If you want penetration, eschew the XTP and try a 250 gr M/L Keith type, cast hard.

You'll not enjoy shooting 300gr. XTP's out of a 4" 629. You'll also probably run out of sight adjustment.

If your S&W has the DX system interchangeable front sight, you can get Patridge sights blades in various heights either from S&W or from custom makers.
Frankly, for all but the largest game a 300gr bullet isn't needed. A good 250gr cast bullet, or quality 240-280gr jacketed bullet, should be more than sufficient for deer-sized game.

If you want penetration, eschew the XTP and try a 250 gr M/L Keith type, cast hard. I'll second that. The 250gr seems to do an excellent job. I cast mine pretty hard also. I do size /lube them for best accuracy. Even my Marlin likes them.
