can a bbl be fluted w/o removal? i have an extra prohunter i am thinking of cutting the weight down on and looking for someone who can do it. Depends on which expert you ask--I'm not--but I've listened to the heated "discussions". Some say a barrel must be fluted before it is rifled and chamber is reamed. Some say before the chambered is reamed. Some say it can be done after both. Most agree that fluting can reintroduce stress after the barrel has been bored/rifled/chambered--so a fluted barrel needs cryo'ed. Most BR guys are skeptical of fluting--and the ones in the weight limited classes (Light and Heavy Varmit--where most of the action its at) are ALWAYS looking for tricks to lose weight so they can add something else (larger/longer barrels, larger/stiffer actions, bigger heavier scopes, etc). The ones who compete a lot shot a lot of rounds in a season. Casey

Speedy set a World Record with a barrel he fluted himself after chambering. All of my competition barrels are fluted after chambering---point is and I could name F-Class other top BR guys but if the fluting is done correctly it will be no problem. Lots of opinions out there but very few are based on actual experience.

There are a lot of opinions. One that I don't understand is why it would matter if a barrel was fluted before or after chambering. Some believe that fluting should be done before the barrel is finish lapped, usually the barrel manufactures. Every barrel I have machined for myself I have also fluted after chambering and lapping, and have won a lot of fake wood and money.
