Hey guys, what kind of velocity should I be getting with my .260? Here are the stats...
24" 8 twist hart barrel
45.6 gr H4831sc
130gr accubond
Fed 210M/Lap brass
I'm getting great accuracy with this load but I'm only getting 2700fps using my magnetospeed. I have no pressure signs at 45.6gr but accuracy goes downhill pretty fast if I increase the load charge. So I guess my question is, if thats all the speed Im gonna be able to get with this load, am I leaving alot on the table or does the fps sound about right for a 260rem and 130gr bullets.

I am interested in what answer you get. I load 140's with same powder at 44.5grain. It mates with the Gameking for stellar results on game but I have only guessed at velocities from my factory 22" barrel. I am just curious asd I don't plan on changing it.

I also load 120 Prohunters for longer distances but in limited samplings so far feel more confident with the heavier Gameking.

How far have you pushed upward? You may be able to go a bit more and have it come back into tune.

It's slow. Try some faster powder such as RL-17 or 4451.

I had the same issues with h4831 in the 260. I switched to h4350 and velocity went up considerably.

Hey Mathman, good question. I only increased it by .1 and then by .2gr. Accuracy declined as the load got bigger. I assume I found a node and am also merely assuming that to find the next node I would have to increase the load substantially (maybe beyond safe limits). That is why I just settled with the 2700fps. Please advise.

Hey JP, I tried h4350 with a few different bullets but my gun just didn't like it. Really poor accuracy for me. Thanks for the suggestion though

Higbean, thanks for the reply. How is the temp stability of those two powders listed? I'm definitely willing to try them.

Does anybody know what velocity I should be getting with a 130gr bullet? 2800? 2900?

According to Hodgdon's website you have some room to work.

Your one tenth increments are really small. If your load was on a node an increase or decrease of a tenth or two should almost go unnoticed. This calls into question the reliability of the good load.

With 45.5 grs of Accurate 4350, I can crack 2800FPS with an 18.5" barrel, at 46grs I get pressure signs. Primer is CCI LR.

I get just under 2900 with a 123 and 48 grains of 4831 out of a 23" barrel, but that's beside the point. You said that accuracy goes away with more powder/velocity, so if you want more velocity and accuracy you need to try some different powders.

See above discussion of the reliability of that result.

You need to put in quite a bit more powder to get up to your next accuracy load.

Or better yet, as suggested already, switch to a faster powder. RL-17 will usually get the most velocity at safe pressure, but I'm not convinced that it is as temp stable as H4350.

Yazoo your velocity is within 25 fps of my Nosler 8 manual which states 45.5 for 2719. RL 17 is probably a good choice 7828 another. RL 26 sounds like the velocity king. Have yet to try myself.

H4831 has always been accurate albeit slow. You may find another node at higher velocity. I 4831 is good as well slightly faster than H4831. I had no luck with 130's and have moved on 120's and 140's shoot lights out with H4831.

Good luck and shoot straight.

That's why I gave up on H 4831 sc in the 260, excellent accuracy but not much speed. Have done much better with IMR 4451, IMR 4350, H 4350 and IMR 7828 ssc.

Agreed. When H4831 behaves like that it's telling you something.

Yep, listen to your barrel and chrono....

That combo with H4831 SC should do 2850 +/- in many bbls that length, but sometimes variables change individual results.

I would experiment. In the end, I doubt most game to sane common ranges will notice, when vitals are hit. Good luck.
