Hope you are faster than the dog....run like hell and climb a tree!!

Nah, if I could not avoid it, and didn't have a knife/pistol....I like the 'offer the weakest limb' method....

You're gonna get chewed on whether you fight back,or give em an arm.If you fight back, you'll likely get chewed on a little less, and you'll get the satisfaction of getting your own licks in too.

I've never been too keen on the ole "play dead" thing.

I had two shepards corral my then wife and oldest daughter in my backyard. I ran them off with just yelling and running at them. I went to the owner and told him what happened. He ordered me off his porch and told his dogs were well trained and they never would do anything like that.
I called the police and the animal control officers. They told that they could do nothing unless they were there to witness the event.
I broke out the 22 semi auto rifle and waited for the next occurance. My wife and daughter were in the backyard hanging clothes and the dogs returned.
I gut shot both of them. The owner paid a lot of vets bills and they still died.
The old wrist rocket slingshot with the steel ball bearings is a quiet killer also.
I have no patience with bothersome dogs.

act bigger, meaner, louder and charge em a bit, and be ready to drop kick em with my #12 steel toe boot...

best defense, an awesome offense!

I haven't had the chance to hunt much this year, and was really wondering the few times I went where all the deer went. I found out last weekend, when I encountered two packs of ferals on my deer lease in about two hours. Most were Pit/Rott/Chow crosses, which is the norm around here. I killed two and scared the hell out of another one, as I was only carrying a single shot .22 at the time, while checking to see if all my ladder stands survived the season. The two I got were head shots at less than ten yards, and none of them were very bashful...I won't go back without at least my Glock 19 if I am carrying the single shot...

The tactic that has worked for me on critters bigger and nastier than dogs (whenever I've been able to use it) since I was a preteen delivering papers is a preemptive attack as the critter's just about to charge. I ran (can't now, of course) toward the critter, fast, yelling and making any other kind of noise that I could make at the time. The usual response was first amazement, then panic.

The last time involved a wild range cow on a friend's ranch on the other side of New Mexico. The rancher and I were afoot, loaded-down with gear but no sidearms. We got too close to the ol' gal's new calf, and she started toward me. I ran toward her and yelled "Don't even think about it!" She nearly fell down reversing her direction and increasing her speed.

I've run bear far into the woods with the same approach.

As far back as the 1940s, I've made feisty dogs leave wet trails in the dirt. That was always good for a chuckle. Their much later, far distant, very tentative woofs added good measure to the mirth.

I have had a fight with a couple of dogs over the years. I am sure none of them were trained whatever thats like. I have had the best luck with punching them.

One was a doberman that came right at me. I punched it right in the nose and it went down. My hand slipped into the dogs mouth and I got cut some but he was out and did not bite. I ran for it and the dog did not follow.

Try this with a pooch. Swing at them with one hand and then the other with roundhouse punches. Don't hit the dog as this is just practice. Do this very fast. You will see right off that they can't keep up with your swinging.

This has worked so far. I hope I never have to do it again but after trying to avoid the dog I would punch it out.

Also shout at the dog first. I shout "go home" as loud as I can.

i don't have much trouble with dogs as a rule... my wife though, walks daily, and carries pepper spray.. it worked, on one occasion, for long enough to get away from the dog...

the story oughtta be titled "Don's really bad day..."

there's an idiot who lives a mile or so from us... raises dobermans "professionally"... that is his only visible means of support, aside from his wife who holds a job in town...
one day my wife was walking by on the road past their place... a gate was open, and here comes one of the dobes... wife sprayed the dog and it went back the way it came rolling and pawing at itself... the idiot saw his dog in distress and comes screaming up to my wife... one more spray and he's down in the roadway... wife continues towards home.....
i'm on my way home from work about this time, happy as a clam and in a good mood... totally unaware of what's going on out there... as i pull into the lane i see my wife coming across the narrow field behind our place... she walks into the house ahead of me, and i'm still unaware of what's happened with the dog and the idiot...
i got to the porch about the time that the idiot pulled into my lane with his S10 revved out... he gets out of the truck shouting, comes stomping and screaming up to me on the porch, and i don't know what in the world is going on... he catches his breath, and tells me about how my wife attacked his dog, and then him.... i verified that this all took place in the roadway, launched him off the porch with a right to the jaw, and told him that if i ever saw or heard of one of his dogs loose again that i was gonna kill all of his dogs and make him wish he were dead... he got to his feet and staggered back to his truck without much else to say... truck wouldn't start.....

STEELHEAD - "I don't accept the question, I ALWAYS have one or the other (or both) on me......... "

I'm with Steelhead.

I'm never unarmed. I carry both handgun and automatic folder.

I've been bitten twice by dogs and I'll never be bitten again. Fight with them?? Offer them my arm to shred?? Pull some Kung Fu Aikiidookarate Crap moves on a vicious dog?? B.S.!

You'd be surprised what a Federal .38 Special 110 grains JHP + P will do to a dog's skull.

Never had a dog that would see through the attack as I was in attack mode myself before they got to me. This includes Rott's,Dobermann's, Shepherds and a few others. The truth is very few dogs are a match for a willing man and they know it. Only thing you got to worry about is their jaws and their bone structure isn't that robust.

+1.
I can't say that I've ever encountered a truly vicious dog. If I am on foot, a "bring it on!" attitude seems to discourage most dogs immediately.
I do alot of bicycling and so far, I've been able to leave them in the dust while on the bike. I probably enjoy the chase as much as the dog.

I had a paper route when I was a kid and delivered the Sat. and Sun. papers early. Every weekend there would be a couple of muts running around loose. I had a squirt gun filled with vinigar and salt. one squirt in the face is all it took to turn a dog around. I kind of looked forward to comeing accross a agresive dog so I could squirt it. I'd even squirt a dog barking at me from inside a fenced yard once in awhile.

The dog that lived there was a very large Rott. Easily over 100 lbs. ...the owner who was a real [bleep] mumbled something about him not biting and the dog after much growling left me alone. Happened three times, the third I called the owner every name in the book and I do think I would have hit him if he came near enough.

I think it would be a [color:"red"] really bad idea [/color] to hit the owner in front of his 100 pound Rott. Most dogs will quickly back down from a man who is willing to fight them, but if you attack their owner they will put up one hell of a fight! The owner probably wouldn't even be able to get that dog off of you unless the dog was very well trained.

Having worked with trained K9s for a while now, I don't trust any type of chemical spray. If the dog is committed, it will only make it angrier. I'm not a big fan of giving a dog ANY part of my body if I can avoid it either. BTDT and have the scars to show from training. I'm gonna go with SH on this one.

two things come to mind:

1) a 9mm and 40 cal glock are pi$$ poor pit bull killers, but will get the job done with enough rounds. (i'm never unarmed).

2) you just have to run faster than the slowest person near you.

i've been attacked once and will never be attacked again. growl and take one step towards me and it's bye bye doggy. i answer all vicious dog calls with my dept. issued 12 ga w/ 00 buck these days

btw i am a dog lover unlike alot of dog owners in the city where i work.

A fellow where I used to work drove a low, fast sports car a real red flag to one big dog in particular, which tried to take it on as Larry drove to work every morning. Larry was worried that the dog would get killed by a car and was wondering whether there was a way to break it of the habit.

I told him of a way that I'd heard about several times but had never tried:
slow down let the dog draw alongside the front tire.
simultaneously push the door open and floor-board the accelerator.
This I'd been told several times would tumble the dog rolling without hurting it.

The next morning, Larry came to work white-faced and bug-eyed.

"I damn near killed that dog!"

He'd tried what I'd told him, and his last sight of the dog was of it going end-over-end over the hood of his car.

And of course it didn't chase Larry's car after that morning.

Had to draw my duty sidearm much more for dogs than for humans here in the wilds but never had to shoot one, thank the gods. (Shooting a dog is exactly like shooting a child in the lights of nearly all dog owners and there's nothing that'll end your LEO career faster than shooting a dog you cannot absolutely prove in court beyond any doubt that you absolutely had to.) Lots of thought should be put into this topic as dogs are much MUCH more of a threat than humans anywhere outside the major cities. Runners, cyclists, kids, walkers, fishermen, etc. should be fully aware and always be ready to deal with Fido.

FOX LABS.
A buddy had a dog from a few doors down constantly digging holes in his yard and crapping on his carport. request from the neighbor did nothing.
I gave him a 3 oz can on FOX and he caught the dog full face one morning.
He said the dog looked like a blow headed home throwing up leaves and dirt w/ his face in the ground full speed.
A few days later He drove by the house to see if the dog was OK and it was lying in its own yard. when it saw hitruck it bolted into a drainage ditch and wouldnt come out.

Squeeze the paw as hard as you can, crush or break paw, leg it if you have the strength.

Break lower jaw (or dislocate) by pulling down away from upper jaw. Grasp upper jaw from above, palm on top covering nasal passage, fingers inserted through the front behind canines. Crush the nasal passage if able to do so with upper jaw palm. Some dogs will have to be incapacitated to stop attack.

The above applies ONLY if under attack already, and have no other defense.

Dogs that are conditioned to attack, will be very difficult to do this . They are faster than humans. You will probably have to take a bite, to give a "bite"!
