My wife dad gave her a Savage 99 and it wears an old Tasco 1-5 scope on it with very fine crosshairs,so fine that you can hardly see them. I took my wife shooting it today and she couldn't find the cross hairs on the target. What scope would you 99 shooters recommend for the gun while not looking to gaudy. It has the scope mounts that look like one is higher than the other, but they are made that way. This will be an under 200 yard shooter. Thank for all answers

Ask 10 "experts" this question and you are going to get 10 different "expert" answers.
Hard to beat a Leupold 2.5-8x-36mm VX-lll with duplex crosshairs IMO.

Any straight tube scope, like a vintage weaver, lyman, redfield, etc... would work well for what you are describing.
Also a Lyman 4x, leupold 4x, redfield 4x, etc...
..2-7x might be a good choice too...
For new scopes, I'd stick to about the same style and power given the details you described for use.

"Under 200 yards." So, what's wrong with iron sights for that?

Last year, I put a Leupold VX2 2-7 on mine. It replaced a Bushnell Scopechief VI (4X) and before that, there was a Weaver K4W.
My Dad's 99 has had a Bushnell Scopechief on it since some time in the 70's.

I'm a Leupold fan myself. Recommend a 1-4 or 2-7, no need to burdon oneself with excess weight. If your shooting is fast and close, then I can only recommend a peep sight with the rear aperture removed. If your eyesight is good and lighting right, a peep sight will take you to 200 yards. my .02 worth

Firstly, older Tasco scopes can be on the dim side of opaque.
Secondly, not seeing fine x-hairs on the target could be a function of the target. A big black bull is not the best target if the scope has fine x-hairs. Contrast is critical to easy aiming. A red TargDot on white backing may be a more appropriate target.
Lots of good scope recommendations posted already, but it is probably worth mentioning having the wife peek through some illuminated reticle scopes at the LGS if her eyes are older than 50-60 years old and can't see standard duplex reticles in a clear scope.

I find it hard to beat an old Leupold M8 4x. With a little patience, you can scare one up here on the classifieds, or on ebay for around a C note.

Mine(premil F 358win) wears a REDFIELD Lo Pro widefield 1 3/4-5. works out perfectly on that rifle.
The original point and click interface was a Smith & Wesson.

I prefer Leupold 2-7x33s on Savage 99s that I'm going to hunt with and always recommend them to others.
I have them on 4 of my 99s in 243, 257AI, 260, and 308.
I prefer the VX-2 style, but the VX-1 shotgun scopes that come with the heavy duplex reticle are a really good value.

I prefer Leupold as well. I use M8 6x on all scoped ones. Works for me. Covers long distance and I have no issues at 25 yards either. May not work for anyone else.

I just listed 3 scopes that would work great on a Sav.99 Leuplod 3x M8, weaver K2 1/2 and a Bushnell Scope Chief Listed here in the Class.
Deer Camp! about as good as it gets!

I'm a traditionalist, and it just seems like 99's and Weaver K-4 El Paso's were meant for each other. That being said, there's a lot better optics available these days. The lens coatings have come a long, long way. I really like the Redfield Revolution line.

My 99E in 300 Savage wears a Leupold 4X scope; my 99F in 300 Savage wears a Weaver 4X. My old 1937 vintage 99EG wears a Lyman aperture sight. The new rifle, a 99F in 250-3000 has a 3-9 Redfield on it for now, at least until I get it sorted out.
I prefer light, fixed power scopes on these classic rifles.

I shoot my 308 a lot. From close to 300, 3x9 Leupold, having the magnification just helps me a ton aside from low light advantages. In the pine thickets in GA, I tend to slip super slow for hours, I use a 2x7 on a 300 T, heavy duplex, just for a compact package and quick to be on target. Vintage looks better, modern works better
