Starting my quest to accumulate some preference points for some future hunts with my son. Im trying to figure if the following states require you to purchase a non refundable license fee(non resident) in order to submit for points only? I.E. for AZ its 160.00 just to apply for hunt, not a deal breaker, just trying to look at what Im going to spend every year to not hunt. If anyone has first hand knowledge Id appreciate the replies as I put together my spreadsheet.
AZ(pretty sure this one is non refundable) CO UT NM WY MT ID

UT,ID require a license to apply. CO you either need a license or pay a fee per species.

Utah will cost you $65.00 for the license annually as a non-resident.
My .25-06 shoots 1/4" all day long and I don't even have to do my part...

Colorado makes you send in the full license fee and keeps $40 of your refund to get a point.
Thanks, I dont mind paying for points to an extent, or even paying the full amount up front. Just trying to weigh out my options. Even AZ may not be too bad since I can apply for for several species using the the 160.00 license and basically break up that cost over 5 species.

I don't think it will be too long before CO completely restructures their preference point program. Presently an entire generation is being shut out of some morepopular hunts

ID and NM have no point system...but both require purchasing a license in full before you can apply for a draw hunt.
As stated earlier, NM will refund the license fee though. ID does not.
NM is really expensive to hunt, but it keeps a lot of folks from applying too.

Idaho has no point system and you have to purchase a license to apply. However - for elk and deer, if you don't draw there are still lots of open hunts with good game numbers. Your license isn't wasted although you'd have to hunt different units. There are no open hunts for moose, sheep, and goats, but you can still hunt the deer and elk if you don't draw.

AZ(pretty sure this one is non refundable) CO UT NM WY MT ID You sir, should have bought a Lifetime license when you lived in AZ. You'd never need to pay for that $160 license upfront and you'd still qualify for resident quantities in the drawing (but pay non-res tag fee's)

Utah is a yearly date till that same date the next year so if you do it right you can get two app years with one license purchase👍🏻

WY you can buy points, no license needed.
The trick to watch for is what happens to your points if you don't buy a point next year. In WY, you can skip a year and keep points, if you skip 2, you go back to 0

Points in Wyoming are $30 for antelope, $40 for deer, and $50 for elk. However, I believe its likely the prices will be increased next year. By how much, I'm not sure.

License is valid for 365 days from purchase - not just a calendar year. Buy/apply as late as possible one year, and then apply before the 365 days are up the following year.

No license fee in Colorado....they have a different way to make some money
You have to buy a $40 Heritage stamp and pay for the full license fee up front...even for just pulling a point
Refunds come in June less a small handling fee for each license applied for
It sounds ok but for my wife and I we float over 2k each April-June to Colorado
