Picked up my new (for me) F today in the .300 Savage. Serial # 9661XX LBC 9K (1959)
It's been tapped for sling eyes and it's got a few "life" marks on it but it looks like a nice shooter. Had an old Weaver K4 60B on it that got some rust flecks so that's coming off.
I have 2 questions please,
My snap cap practice ammo doesn't seem to feed right. It sometimes fails to bring up the next round when I'm ejecting the one in the chamber. If I work the lever very firmly they feed better, slowly the shells don't lift into position. The snap caps are the same size as .300 savage ammo but are much lighter, maybe this is the problem? Tomorrow when it's light outside I'll try some live ammo and see what's up.
The buttstock and butt plate are both marked XT4F. The forearm, at the circle where numbers are normally marked, has nothing. Not a number or a letter to be found. Were the F forearms marked? The forearm looks period but if it has been switched out it's no biggie for me as I said this gun is a shooter/hunter. I'm more interested in how the shells feed.
Lastly, If the magazine spring is a bit soft causing the shells not to jump up into place is that a correctable issue? Overall I'm happy with the gun but had these questions and concerns.
As always I thank everyone in advance for any help or insight they may have.
Harry

You can increase the spring tension on the rotor but I'd wait until you run some real ammo thru it.
Savage actions work better when you operate them briskly - not rough, sorta like you'd do while hunting.

Thanks Mike, I hope that's all it is. I have 3 days to look at gun but I can't get to the range until Sat. I really want to run live ammo through it. I think I'll ask the guy if I can have a 4th day.
Now after my initial post I got out my 52 and 54 EGS. Both cycle fine with the same A Zoom practice ammo that this F is having some trouble with.

If you reload, you might want to load up a couple of dummy rounds. Brass, bullet, no primer/powder.
Dummies are handy things to carry to gun shows too.

Again I'm still curious regarding as to why there are no numbers/letters on the normal spot on the forearm.
Logic says replaced forearm. If it was replaced it had to be quite awhile ago as the forearm matches the buttstock perfectly, the cut checkering is crisp and exact.
With the "never say never" with Savage is there anyway this 1959F left the factory without any markings on the forearm?
Thanks,
Harry

Thanks Jed, It does look fine but I was just curious why no markings at all.
Get's dark up here early but I got the OK to sneak out early tomorrow and I'm heading to the club. I'll run some live ammo through it and see if that feeds right or not.
I have a 3 day inspection period with the gun. So I need to be sure if I even have a problem with live ammo and if so am I looking at a simple rotor spring adjustment or something more serious.
The gun looks like it's been in a closet for quite sometime.
Thanks,
Harry

Your problem with feed may not be a problem at all. Tiny bit of oil on a Q-tip on the front end of the rotor where the numbers are, OR a little alcohol (not the drinking kind) in the same location, may be all that's needed. No markings on the forend ?? Like Jed said, don't sweat it. You should be able to tell fairly close visually the originality of the wood. Savage didn't ALWAYS do anything with consistency. Everything you have mentioned so far would be of no concern to me. Shoot the darn thing and then decide. If your seller is reasonable he should understand and MAYBE give you an extra day or so. Let us know. Congratulations.

Thanks again Jed. I'll shoot it tomorrow, see what happens. Hope it's fine as I do like it. First F I have held. Lighter than my EG's and with the 22" barrell it swings up sweet.

Thanks Steve, I'll try a touch of oil and a good cleaning before I hit the range tomorrow. I'll keep ya posted.

Update, all seems fine. Took a good 3 hrs last night and cleaned the gun stem to stern. It was pretty dirty. The lever and rotor were a bit sticky. Cleaned with Break free CLP and worked the action quite a few times. Got to the range this afternoon and loaded it and cycled the 6 rounds through it, no problems. Repeated a dozen or so more times and no miss loads or jams. Shoots fine. The lever is still a bit tight and its a bit hard to open the lever when the guns on the shoulder but some more cleaning and use should help with that.
Funny thing is after it was working well I tried the snap caps again and it jammed first time. I guess Fs, at least this F, want nothing to with these snap caps.
Hope to have a digital camera soon and maybe Ill finally get to post a few pics.
Thanks again! Harry

Damn snap caps freaked me out. Both my EG'S load and cycle em' no problem. When they wouldn't work in this F I was running around the house yelling the damn gun was broke. Oh well, I'm certainly calmer today.
