Hey all, was wondering what the usual tip would be for a guided black bear hunt over bait? Percentage? Or what is the going rate?

Considering your user name, I'd start at about %50...and tip the cook too.

50 dollars or percent? 50% would be a little steep I would think.

Don't take Bwana seriously he is one of the sockpuppets here. If I had the info I would surely give it to you. Maybe one of the bear hunters will chime in with standard practice.

A hundred or 2 if he does a good job skinning and taking care of the hide.

For black bear, I agree, $100-300, depending on how hard the guide worked for you.

I normally tip 15-20% based on how hard they work for you, the tip isn't based on success...guides don't get paid much, they depend on tips like a wait staff.

I would say Bawana is roughly correct with $100 being a minimum for a hunt that lasted 2-3 days even if it isn't a one on one sort of deal. I don't know though if it should be based just on success though. I have had successful experiences where the guy was basically a jerk and unsuccessful where the guide (s) still made it enjoyable. Basically I can tell if there is a good effort made and I appreciate it when the guide also tries to make it enjoyable maybe share a new technique that you don't know etc.I don't appreciate someone thats constantly bitching about the previous weeks client ( it will be the ou next week) wants to brag about his love life, or try and prove he is the better man because he can out hike an out of shape middle aged businessman or Dr. that's not use to the thin air in the mountains etc. or is pissed because the hunter didn't want to take a shot he/she didn't feel right about. Or uses your dime to scout the next drainage for the high roller he has booked next week.

I normally tip about 15% of the total hunt cost.
Maybe slightly less if the hunt doesn't live up to expectations and slightly more if it exceeds your expectations.

Is your guide sitting over the bait in the stand with you to help you judge/decide or just driving you to the drop off?

I went on a hunt (archery) and my guide was a rifle Hunter. He had absolutely no idea how different it was to be a rifle Hunter versus an archer. I was so disgusted with his antics, his shoes were so loud, I started calling him "Cap'n Crunch."
I complained to the owner of the club about him. The owner agreed to let me hunt on my own. I did not tip him, as far as I was concerned he was worthless!
