Not sure why they made these. Gotta think they could sell oodles of thirty-thirties, which would be a better choice for most purposes. I know there's some cheap ammo out there in 7.62x39, but how many people are going to feed it to a No.1?

Blasphemy writ large.

Not a bad gun for a blind, though, compact, effective, modest muzzle blast & recoil. Wish it had better wood, but...

The load is the Nosler 123gr Ballistic Tip, over a warmish charge of 1680. Makes 2550 fps out of the Ruger's 22" barrel, which is a couple hundred fps better than an AK or SKS can get. Dropped that pig in its tracks with a shoulder shot. Dragged the pig back to the blind, 10 minutes later another horde of pigs showed up.

Ruger also made a small number of .30-30's in the #1A, but they are almost impossible to find. I'd like to see another run of those, and a run in .35 Remington.

Sort of neat little rifles but I agree about the 30-30 and 35 Remington . A 348 win would also be sort of cool.

I've often wondered why Browning/Winchester never brought out the
High Wall in .348. Some of the custom SS makers do; Dave Scovill had (or had) one.

Darrik has .338 Federal No.1s, at a good price of course. Not a bad way to go.

I think (would have to get my book out)a small number of original High Walls were made in .33 Winchester. Or maybe I'm thinking the .35 Winchester. I know there a few made in .405, as Ken Waters wrote about one.

The .348 won't really do anything the Whelen won't do - except fit in a Model 71. Which is not trivial smile
