I loved this video. Its about an hour long but it documents a man clearing out a spot in the Alaskan wilderness and building a cabin. Labor intensive work but very satisfying. Even makes wooden hinges for the door.
have you paid your dues, can you moan the blues, can you bend them guitar strings

Have you been living under a rock. This is a great video. Actually there are more than one. But they have been around for ?maybe? twenty years. You need to get out more.

Wind in my hair, Sun on my face, I gazed at the wide open spaces, And I was at home.
being a non-Alaskan, I have a real respect for the craft shown here.
Me too!
Mr. Proenneke started out as a non-Alaskan (Iowa), but clearly had the skills to make the switch.

I wouldn't recommend you tenderfoot, city-slicker, greenhorns attempt any of the wilderness skills Iowans practice regularly.
I wouldn't either............

unfortunately people like me have seen real Alaskans defined by the Discovery Channel, not real documentaries

I guide tours there (and fishing trips)in the summers..if you get the chance to visit it, it really is a special place. The craftsmanship and the engineering mind that that man possessed is incredible.
One of my favorite things to do is tell the clients that one of the many car-sized boulders is "teetering rock" (the one from one of the movies). Then, after they have tired themselves out, I show them the real one and how they can move it with one hand...
Decide that you want it more than you are afraid of it.
Great video! I admire this guy. I am an experienced log cabin builder. Twenty years ago, I bought 39 acres in the NC mountains, and went there and built a very nice custom log cabin. Took about a year. I buy the logs from a sawmill and cut the notches myself with a big chisel and a chain saw. My cabin is beautiful if I do say so myself. Didn't know a soul in the state of NC I thought I was a real Daniel Boone.
Then I saw the video about this guy. Went up into the Alaska wilderness and and built his log cabin with hand tools only, including wooden hinges for the door. Damn. This guy is a real bad ass.
I must say, my cabin is nicer than his, but I cheated I had 3 chain saws, 2 Stihl and a Husqvarna, and I had a DeWalt circular saw and a big Milwaukee drill. On-the-grid electricity.
