As you can see the TSX exit wound did not achieve the double in diameter one would expect in a .277 bullet. The exit wound is only .5in, not the expected .554. Thank Christ the deer was post rut and didn't have a lick of fat on him. I'd hate to see how much of a failure I'd have had if the deer would've weighed the usual 200# plus rather than the 160 he did. Actually all kidding aside the shot was 137 yards, he was quartering away, I put the crosshairs on the far shoulder and down he went. Traveled 13 maybe 15 yards. The entrance wound was the very lower left rib cage just forward to the left ham with the exit from the right shoulder. He was walking away and we barely got him to stop. As soon as he did I pulled the trigger. I didn't want to take the chance to see if I'd get a broadside and waste an opportune shot so I took what he gave me. Not a monster, but he grossed 160 and he'll net 151-2.

Congrats on the fine buck. What load did you use?

Where have you been? You can't kill a South Texas deer with a 270!!!!! It is a wonder he didn't attack and kill you. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Nice, Nice Deer!! Congrats!!!
Did you check his age? Post rut deer are really hard for me to judge. He looks pretty mature, but he doesn't have a super old looking face and neck from what I can see.
Thanks for the story and the pics!

Thanks guys. Yeah I agree a mature buck looks awfully young after losing over 50lbs of fat. He didn't have a drop of fat on him at all. Frankly he looked about 4 1/2 y/o, deep chest but he shrunk "up" from his legs as compared to the pre rut boys who hang to the ground. This ol' bastard was 158 on the hoof, I think 26 lbs of hide & horns and 108 cleaned and dressed, as compared to the usual weights of 200-220lbs on the hoof and in the 180s dressed. Oh yeah, he was 6 1/2 y/o. The rifle is a pre war mod 70 Ser # 109, (made second month of production March 1936), Krieger 24in barrel, Conetrol rings on custom bases, metalwork by Jim Dubell on a nice piece of bastogne, leather covered recoil pad, skeleton grip, rust blued, nitre blued screws, yada yada yada. Here are some more pics:
