We have the SRH Alaskan chambered for .480 Ruger on clearance for $599. We only have one.

I am just a sales associate so I get no benefit from this at all. Just wanted to let you all know about a great deal.

That thing is heavy as a rifle... LOL. I sold mine and bought a carryable 329PD instead.

The 480 isn't that bad in a shoulder or chest rig. To me a self defense rig needs to be powerful and shootable. IMHO I'm not willing to trade off weight to the point that I end up with a gun I can't shoot well. The 480 is very shootable, and very accurate.

I'm tempted to drive down and snag that, what barrel length?

It's the Alaskan. That is the short-barreled model. I believe it is 3".

Call to have it held if you want it. And hollar at me if you drive down.

Thats a great price, I havnt seen them for much less than 850.

Id grab it but its too far away from me and I recently scored a 2.75" redhawk.

We all set our parameters. For that size and weight, I'm going to carry a rifle of some type instead.

And have settled on using the 329PD or the Glock 20 for when carrying handguns.

Thats still a heck of a deal. Should go buy it as a hunting pistol if nothing else. Although 3 inches is a bit short on sight radius for hunting. Not unworkable though, my 329PD with the shallow V leaf is deer accurate with a 4 inch tube out to about 75 ish yards, 100 most of the time, but 75 for sure.

Even more desireable IMO...

Didn't catch the Alaskan tag, not interested. My next 480 will be a Toklat configuration, i.e. 5" barrel.

That's a great price but...

The Alaskan in 454 is actually a 45 Colt ballistically due to it's short barrel.

The Alaskan in 44 Mag is actually a 44 Special ballistically due to it's short barrel.

I will have to chronograph my 3" 629 with 320 gr. Double Tap loads again as my memory escapes me. Somehow I don't think any .44 special load will be able to match it. Having carried both large frame 3" and 5" .44's while both hiking and fishing,I think I will stick with the 3". I don't think any .44 special load in an equivalent gun will match the magnum, especially with the heavier bullets.

I would expect the 480 Alaskan to have little trouble pushing a 400 gr bullet 1000 fps, with a long nose bullet and a max dose of H-110 1100 fps and change should be attainable. A 400 gr hardcast bullet even at a sedate 1000 fps is a penetrating SOB.

To me there is a balance between packability and shootability. My ability to accurately place shots starts to fade when the barrel gets shorter then 4 1/2" and I find 5 to 5 1/2" a real sweet spot. I can't abide packing a gun I can't shoot accurately.
