I picked a used one up a little while ago, finally got a chance to take it to the range today. Terrible conditions, between 2 ding-a-lings with AR's in various calibers with muzzlebreaks who didn't believe in seeign where their last shot hit before emptying the rest of the mag...

I digress, I used some 30mm Talley EX-LOW rings and stuck in a Leupold VX-6 1-6x24 scope in there, regular duplex.

It was a bit windy and I was pinched between leaving work 2 hours later than I wanted to and having to get the kids from school. So I ended up putting about 40 rounds through my new (to me) montana from 3 different types of ammo in about an hour. Not ideal but I got to get a feel for the gun.

It shot everything about MOA, I got a group of 3 that cloverleafed with the 62 gr. Barnes TSX factory load I was using. I plan in looking more into that bullet for future honing.

Overall I'm happy, gonna clean it out and try again here when I can. But in the meantime, I've seen some posts that referened mods to the .223 montana's for accuracy/ function with longer bullets, messing with the mag box/spacer and some other things.

I plan on bedding it, but is thee anything specific to the .223 that I should do to the mag box/spacer to tighten the groups down a little bit?

I love the montana in 223. I actually traded a colt 6920 for mine.

I usually hang up my KM in .308 win when the bears decide to take a snooze, and carry my KM .223 all winter long. Works well on fur and bou.

I mainly bought the rifle to save on shooting- I can reload/shoot a lot more .223 for less money than reloading my .308 win. And, since it is set up almost exactly the same as my .308 win, when I do pick up my 308 to hunt big game there's no confusion in the heat of the moment.

I run 62 gr ttsx with a max load of CFE 223 for hunting, and a bit tamer load of CFE 223 with 55 fmj for plinking. I also load up 55fmj with trailboss and have plinked a lot of small game, and fur while trapping.

I get around an inch at 100yds with the ttsx load, so don't fret about getting groups tighter. Good enough for my needs...

Enjoy your rifle...they are a fun rig to have.

There is a rather lengthy thread started by ShortActionSmoker that covers tinkering with Montana's to improve accuracy. Some folks use it kinda like a check list. Link here...
