Coworker handed these too me today and said have fun. He gave $0.50 at a yard sale for them a weekend ago. Was wondering if anyone had any idea when they were made. My guess is 60's, but I'm terrible with guesses. Container says made in England, and both decks are still wrapped. One with gold print and one with silver.

Thanks for any info.

I remember seeing those at a gunshop here back in the early 70's! I was going to buy them but bought the print of the black lab puppies in the big wooden shotgun shell box instead..

I'm no Bridge player but I understand that 2 decks with different colors on the backs are used. I think that's what you have.

Measure them:
Quote
There are two versions of the standard playing card: the bridge size and the poker size. The bridge size is narrower than the poker size. A poker size card is 2.5 inches wide by 3.5 inches tall. A bridge size card is 2.25 inches wide by 3.5 inches tall.

I think they were still available in '80-'81. Thats about the time I got mine. I was working full time at LGS then. They are out on shelf in my shop. I think wifey made off with the 22 ammo tins for pins and buttons and such.

Box with cellophane is 2-5/8x3-5/8. Just by eyeball I'd say poker cards.

Real men don't play Bridge anyway. grin

Years ago I worked for a short time for a company that sold Bridge cards with fishing scenes. They came with 1 deck with gold trim and the other with silver. I'm sure that's what you have even though they aren't the standard size.

Sounds like a great deal but then I'm the worlds biggest sucker for hunting swag and hunting related antiques.
Those are VERY cool!

I thought those had all been recalled.

Maybe not today, but some did and made a lot of money at it.

My late father-in-law, Howard Riley, the son of a NYC fireman whose mother died and who grew up in a firehouse playing endless card games, literally put both himself and his sister through Columbia College and Law School by playing cards, mostly bridge.

He then played at the Columbia [alumni] Club on West 43rd Street with his partner, Louis Watson, author of "The Play of the Hand at Bridge," and he told me that playing together, they never lost.

Checking this on Amazon.com, I came across the following quote:

The introduction to "Watson on the Play of the Hand at Contract Bridge" by Oswald Jacoby states that Watson never made a mistake in the play of the hand.

Howard also told me that Jacoby, famous for writing a column on bridge in The New York Times, used to watch them play often and would place bets on them. Finally, Howard said that he told Jacoby to cut them in on the winnings – or else. I suspect that he did, though I never heard the rest of that story.

Howard eventually became a vice president of a big insurance company.

Bridge was hugely popular throughout the country and was the "high class" game of the rich in the early and mid 20th Century. Today of course there are many other forms of entertainment, though I know that Warren Buffett and Bill Gates still play it together all the time.

No, they just quit making ammunition for them.
