But the 7mm bullets suck at killing game. That's why I don't hunt deer sized game with sub-.308 calibers. Good 7mm bullets do quite well, contrary to your contention. My first elk was taken with what I consider a relatively poor specimen compared to other 7mm bullets, but even that bullet convinced the bull elk I hit it with to lay down on the spot. After 25 years of hunting elk, deer and antelope with one, if forced to choose only one rifle to hunt the rest of my life with the 7mm Rem Mag would be the one I keep. Not because it fails often but because it never has.

A good .30-06 is a 99% solution.

Just wondering how people feel about this cartridge, what have you hunted with it? Anything it won't do? Favorite load? Back to the original question. Got momentarily distracted by Swamp's nonsense.... I've only killed a couple of pigs with the .308 - one small one, one not so small. Was using 165gr SSTs on both. The big one was moving as fast as he could move through the brush, and hit too far back. He went maybe 60 yards before holing up in the thick stuff. Required a finisher through the head. The little one was shuffling around in the brush and hit too far back, but didn't go anywhere. I was pretty amazed by how big an exit wound the SST did on the little one. There was no exit wound on the big one. Given the poor shot placement, I was rather pleased with how it worked, and look forward to using it some more. This the bigger one. John

Personally, I have never had use for a bullet in .308 caliber. I've shot a 308 win. and didn't care for it. I thought it had too much recoil for it's performance level. If I'm going to take that much recoil I'd prefer to step up to a 300 Win Mag. and get some performance advantage.
Neck that 308 case down to 24, 25, or 7mm and then you'd have something that I'd be interested in shooting.

I haven't shot the .308 winny as much as some other cartridges, but I've never found a reason not to like it.

I'll get a bunch of schit for this, but I do not like mine, never have, never will. However it is my first rifle, purchased new in 68. Has real nice wood on it. One of the grandkids will end up wwith it.

Try it in a Savage 99 sans recoil pad.

Try it in a Savage 99 sans recoil pad. Or a Winchester Model 88 w/o recoil Pad. The stock pops my cheekbone unlike no other rifle I've ever owned...

Have shot both in such a manner many times. My 444, after years of the factory brick on the end, just got a good pad...........Don't know what I was waitin' for....

Swampman, I've read all the stories too. Trigger-time has convinced me the 30-06 is no slouch in the accuracy department. Hard to argue with that! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

I strongly considered a .308 among other calibers when I bought an "All-'Round World" rifle. It was pretty balanced with the bullet weight I wanted to use (165g Nosler Partition at 2,700 fps) - which meant that it still had good expandability (2,100 fps) at the longest range (300 yards) that I intended to shoot.
In the end, however, I was concerned with its recent history as a military cartridge, and harbored a worry that some countries might refuse me entry for my "military" rifle cartridge. I went with a 30-'06 instead, whose military history is buried a bit further back.

I really like the .308, and have used it for years in handy carbines, but I use the .30-06 almost all the time now, since it can throw 180 grain bullets a lot faster, and because I mostly hunt moose.
