Sorry for the lack of info, but here goes:

A friend of mine, while digging through his late grandfather's collection, came across a what we believe to be a steyr mannlicher carbine.

I haven't seen it (which wouldn't make any difference anyway, as I know nothing about old rifles) or pictures of it. All I know is it says Steyr on it, and 1908. No caliber markings to be seen.
I guess my question is, what cartridges were these rifles chambered for?

most likeley either 8mm steyr mannlicher or 6.5 SM.

Cohiba, is 6.5 MS the same as 6.5x54?

My books show the Model 1908 Carbine availible in 7x57mm or 8x56 mm chamberings.

Yes, the 6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer dates to 1903 so i am pretty sure that it was an offered chambering. It would be like winchester leaving out the WSM on the whole M70 line.

The 6.5x54 was not offered in the model 1908.
The 1908 is found in 8x56 and VERY rare 7x57.
The models are very specific as to cartridge chamberings.
The 1900 and 1903 is found in 6.5x54.

Are there other cartridges (besides 8MS) marked 8x56?
