I just got this last week end, I thought I had seen this picture before but searching through what seemed like 100's of Phillip Goodwin painting I do not see this one. I was hopping to find one that may have had better detail of the rifle.

I'm certain I've seen that picture before because the image is fairly unique. Shooting a bear from a log raft in the rapids. It'd be hard enough just holding onto a raft in those conditions let alone taking aim at a bear and not dropping your rifle in the drink. Still its a cool image and it does look like a 99. Do you think it might have been painted as a promotion for Savage?

Look at the size of the cartridges in his belt, Joe.
I'm not greedy, I just want one of each.

What's holding that forward oar in the thole pins? And if it is held in place, what is going to happen when the lower end of the oar fetches up on bottom? Bet he won't be shooting a bear then!
Neat puzzle though, and it does look like a 99.

Maybe it is an "E".
(I know, wrong era, but work with me here I'm trying to make a joke)
He knows he can always paddle with it so he does not care if he loses the oar!
LOL!!!!

I'm pretty sure it was used in the 1927 or 1928 Savage -Stevens calender. I know fug has one of the original calenders. That picture is also a lot more common with the shooter holding a Winchester. Don

You're right, its the 1927 calendar, Savage titled it "It's Savage Time". The original oil was done in 1925, titled "When Action Counts", that shows the hunter shooting a Winchester, the lithographer changed the rifle to a 99 for Savage. The original looks much better than the lithograph, it was in the Oklahoma State University collection in Stillwater, I don't know if it is still there or not.

Thanks for all the information, I thought I may have seen it before here, but couldn't get anything to turn up in a search. The only marking I see on it is a small copyright stamp. It's been glued together so I can't look at the backs of pieces for markings. (... so Gnoahh, I didn't have to try to put it together! )

If you were wondering who made the puzzle, I know nothing about puzzles, I do know Goodwin's works were made into puzzles by a number of companies. Tuco, Guild, Picadilly Jig, Big Star, Perfect Picture Puzzle, Pastime Picture Puzzle were companies that I had seen listed. I think the copyright you show is for the Louis F Dow Lithograph company of St Paul, MN, they produced the calendar for Savage, the puzzle was probably made by Perfect Picture Puzzle, I googled Louis Dow and it seems the Perfect company bought a lot of illustrations from them. I hope this helps.

Thanks Tim, So the puzzle could be from the late 20's or 30's?
